Shopping in Al Karama - cheap cheap cheap

Shopping is one of Dubai's main attractions and there are plenty of malls and shopping-centers around town. Somewhat less known is Karama Market, which is an outdoor-market (avoid the mid-day heat - I almost passed out) that offers everything from clothing, shoes, and any touristy stuff your heart desires for a considerably lower price than the malls.

Karama is also an incredibly good place to find souveniers and touristy knick-knacks - perfect to buy the stuff you have to bring home for friends and family.

I got a pair of sandals, a skirt, and 3 coin-belts, alltogether at around US $ 50.--. As usual, all prices are negotiable, so walk out and the vendors come running after you with a better price.

    How to get there:
Al Karama is a district next to Bur Dubai. Just hop into a cab and tell them Karama Market - they'll get you there. (Near Za'abeel Road and Al Adhid Road, if you want to walk there.)

Raise your blood pressure (on the dunes)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a day trip out of Dubai to the desert for a heart-stopping 4 X 4 thrill ride over the sand dunes. The tour company will pick you up in Dubai, in the 4 X 4 you will ride over the dunes in, and then drive you and your companions for about an hour out of the city. Once you reach the dune area, the tires of the 4 X 4 are deflated, and off you go! Up and over dunes, sliding downward, *sideways*, gunning it up a steep dune and hurtling over the sandy lip atop it....

When you think your bladder can't take it anymore, the driver stops for a photo op, and then off you go back to the tire-filling pump. To end the trip, many tours take you to a barbecue dinner at a bedouin "village." There you can ride a camel, watch a belly-dancing performance, get a henna design painted on you, and have your picture taken in traditional dress. Of course this is not a real village, but is just for show. Or maybe "shows."

    Hatta
  • Tip Rating:
  • Less than two hours' drive from Dubai city is the ancient fortressed village of Hatta, home of the Hatta Fort Hotel, Dubai's only mountain resort complex.

The drive is as fascinating as the destination itself, taking the visitor through burnished sand dunes and mountains of varied colour.

Tours cover the recently-renovated old fort and a trip through Wadi Hatta with its lush greenery and variety of wildlife.

The village, over 200 years old, and Juma Mosque which stands amidst palm groves, are other tourist attractions.

Is that luxury or what!!!??? I've been there today to take some photos and WOW what a fabulous place!!! you feel relaxed just by listening to the soothing music and wander around the place!
The Royal Waters includes a GYM, swimming pool and a spa... you can go there and spend a whole day in the gym and swimming pool for only AED 35 (almost $10).. the treatments however are more expensive.. between AED 100 and 250..($30 - 100)...
I'll update this page when I try it myself.. and tell you the results :)

    Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dubai's version of downtown Manhattan, Sheikh Zayed road is a bustling commercial district lined with high rise skyscrapers. The World Trade Centre and the Emirates Tower Hotel shadow some of the other tall buildings on the highway. Ultra-modern towers of glass and steel that reflect Dubai's international and cosmopolitan outlook line both sides of the main highway to Abu Dhabi.

    Road to Hatta
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can easily hire cars in Dubai, but avoid the peak hour traffic. A Friday, our weekend, is a good day to drive. Once you're out of the city it's easy - good roads, good signage in English as well as Arabic and not too many roads to choose from. One good, easy choice is to drive to Hatta. Simply follow the signs.

You go past the end of Dubai Creek, with its wetlands bird sanctuary with flocks of flamingoes, and into typical desert, then into an area of beautiful golden dunes, where you'll find several companies offering motor bike and quad bike dune-bashing. You'll see plenty of camels along the way. Further on into the mountainous region and there's a whole string of pottery and carpet shops - very cheap pottery and silk Persian carpets for around US$100. Past an area with hilltop villas more like Spain than Dubai and into the village of Hatta, which is only a few hundred metres from the Oman border.

The Hatta Fort Hotel is a good place to stop for lunch, and a leisurely drive back to Dubai in time for dinner. Each way will be about one and a half hours.

    Chasing after wild camels...
  • Tip Rating:
  • ... with a camera that is.

If you drive out of the city a little, you will notice nothing but desert - and strangely enough, there are fences on both sides of the road that separate the street from the desert. This is to protect both wild and domesticated camels from getting hit by a car, as much as it protects drivers from hitting a camel. Should you hit a domesticated camel, you will have to pay bloodmoney to the owner. The fences have their purpose...

We were a little outside of Dubai when we encountered the first camels. I didn't even see them, but one of our friends had a keener eye - yes it is a bit hard to see a sand-colored camel in the midst of nothing but sand-colored sand! So we stopped and on foot went onto our mini-photo-safari. We got all the way to the fence until the dad-camels took off. (We suppose thaqt was to get help from other camels, not of fear - dad wouldn't be a coward, now would he?) The other 2 didn't care, even when our friend Dan slipped under the fence to get a closer picture of them (not sure if that is legal or not). Dan got pretty close to them until I started yelling at him to not go any closer - they do have big teeth!

Just a word of warning: when you are in the mid-day sun in the desert in August - wear closed shoes. It is incredibly how extremely hot that sand gets. Just a few grains of sand slipping into the sandals and your toes get boiled and blistered!

    :-D

    Bird-Watching
  • Tip Rating:
  • The United Arab Emirates' varied landscape supports over 390 bird species, of which 330 are migrants from Siberia and Central Asia.

The country's prime position on a migratory crossroads guarantees an amazing selection of birds, many not easily found anywhere in Europe or elsewhere in the Middle East.

Customised bird-watching tours range from a day to a week or more, and take in the full range of landscapes from Dubai's parks and golf clubs to desert, mountains and the Creek.
