India Palace @ Ibn Battuta Mall: A favourite Indian restaurant

by colin_bramso

One of the more up-market restaurants in Ibn Battuta Mall's China Court, India Palace has an extensive and varied menu of genuine Indian food. It's one of our favourite Indian restaurants.Service is terrific, the waiters are knowledgeable about the dishes, it's comfortable and casual. Each table has a basket of crispy sesame bread and pots of different dips. They have a very good buffet on Fridays, which costs only AED50, although we always choose from the a la carte menu. Dum Murgh Biryani, an excellent example of the tasty all-cooked-together-in-a-sealed-pot dish, with chunks of chicken breast. Rogan josh, the classic lamb dish. Makai Khumb Masala, a very tasty vegetarian dish of corn & mushrooms in various spices.

Bussola: Fine dining Italian restaurant

by colin_bramso

A beautiful fine dining restaurant in the beachfront garden of Westin Dubai. It's in a detached building designed like a traditional conservatory with large windows all round, an al fresco area in the garden and a more casual rooftop pizza & bar area. There are views across the garden and beach to Palm Jumeirah.Staff are excellent, from the greeting to the service, and the food is good, although the presentation can be pretentious with some of the dishes. Osso Bucco is one of my Italian favourites and Bussolo makes it beautifully. It's served with a portion of creamy risotto, which is another of my favourites, so it's a perfect choice for me.

India Palace @ The Walk JBR: Our favourite Indian restaurant

by colin_bramso

One of our favourite Indian restaurants has always been India Palace at Ibn Battuta Mall. Now they have opened a more stylish restaurant at The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai Marina. The food is just as good and it's served in a more upmarket restaurant - you can dress casually and many do, but smart casual is more appropriate.Excellent food, excellent service, a nice atmosphere in a very pleasant location and inexpensive - what more could you want! We've tried many different dishes from the extensive menu but usually settle on our favourites, chicken biryani for Geina, lamb rogan josh for me and a dish of makai khumb masala, sweetcorn and mushrooms in a spicy sauce, to share.

Scoozi @ Dubai Festival City: Pizza - the real thing.

by colin_bramso

I like the real thing when it comes to pizza and pasta.Pizza made the Italian way with the right wheat used for the pastry, thin crust, traditional toppings. The same goes for pasta, in particular the tomatoes, so critical in Italian cuisine, have to be the correct variety to get the authentic Italian flavour. That's what you get at Scoozi and we eat at two of their branches. The one at Dubai Festival City is on the ground floor with a large indoor area plus some tables outside overlooking the canal.Excellent staff, a relaxed casual atmosphere and a real Italian flavour to the food. For pizza my favourites are Margherita, with just tomato, cheese & basil, and Puttanesca, which is tomato, cheese, anchovies, black olives & capers. For pasta I like spaghetti and Scoozi serves excellent Spaghetti bolognese.

La Dolce Vita: Home made pasta!

by colin_bramso

You can always taste the difference when pasta is home made and La Dolce Vita has it. The pizzas have the genuine Italian flavour too, and that's not always the case with pizza. It's in Dubai Marina's Jumeirah Beach Residence district, on The Walk, is recently opened but already hugely popular.Sit outside if you can find a table, unfortunately the inside decor is not good at all and somewhat spoils the experience. Outside you're also in the buzz of The Walk with Dubai's cosmopolitan population strolling by.Good service, even some Italians, and an extensive menu of pizza, pasta, salads and secondi platti. The highlight is the pasta because it's home made and the risotto because it's simply the best in town. A couple of other Italian restaurants offer genuine pizzas, but these are as good as any.Fettucini Alfredo, pasta with a cream & mushroom sauce, and spaghetti bolognese, the old...

On The Border: Not really Mexican

by colin_bramso

The restaurant is in the very popular The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence. If you're looking for real Mexican food you won't find it here, this is another American fast food joint masquerading as a Mexican restaurant.Having said that, it's as good as any I've found in town for so-called Tex-Mex food.Chilli is noticeable by its abscence in the dishes, so again if you don't like your food too spicy this is for you. Mexican is one of my favourite cuisines and I do like it spicy, and at least I could add that with the complimentary salsa and the chilli sauce supplied, both of which had the necessary heat.Service is fast, friendly, knowledgeable, as good as any in Dubai. You have a choice of outdoor tables or two levels inside. They offer the usual Tex-Mex menu of fajitas, burritos, empenadas and so on.

El Chico: Mexican at the Marina

by colin_bramso

An extensive, good decor, excellent service and atmosphere. The food has improved enormously since we first ate here so I've updated this Tip.It's not a true Mexican restaurant, it's an American version of one, but I can recommend it. El Caballero which is a combination of a beef burrito topped with chili con queso, a chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce, a beef taco, served with rice & refried beans, and a similar Alfreds Sampler, both marked as hot but I would say is mild. The grilled chicken & shrimp with saute vegetables and rice is also very good.As it's not in a hotel, alcohol is not available.

Stefano's: More Italian at the Marina

by colin_bramso

Another good Italian restaurant in Marina Walk, Stefano's has the usual menu of pastas, pizzas, meat & seafood courses and risottos with a good dessert selection including gelato.Well designed inside with a large outdoor area, including a sheesha smoking section, and both have views across the marina. At night in particular the views are stunning. We like risotto and the Risotto Milanese is particularly good - it's with saffron and cheese. They also have a very good wild mushroom risotto. There are plenty of pasta and sauce options too, which you mix & match. For me fettucini puttanesca is a good combination.

Suvoroff: Russian at the Marina

by colin_bramso

The menu at Suvoroff offers many more choices than most in Dubai and includes many dishes which I haven't seen anywhere else. Some are a bit over-complicated in my opinion but there's plenty of choice and the prices are very reasonable.Like many Dubai restaurants you have a choice of dining inside or out. Inside is well designed in a basic, comfortable way (apart from the huge stuffed bear) and while the outside area is next to the street it's below street level and screened by bushes and other greenery. It's not connected to a hotel so there's no alcohol. Geina had leg of duck in a sweet berry sauce and I had chicken leg stuffed with cheese, breadcrumbed and fried. Both were good enough for us to decide to go back to the restaurant again. They also have blinis with caviar, which I didn't try but as it's one of my favourites I'll order it next time.

Cafe Supreme: Excellent city coffee shop

by colin_bramso

I'm fussy about my coffee and this is a coffee shop I like. Excellent coffee, good service and a good location if you're in Deira. Plenty of seats both inside and out - apart from summer it's good to sit outside and watch the bustle of Al Rigga Street. They have a good selection of salads, sandwiches, egg dishes, desserts and fruit juices. The coffee's good, fresh lemon & mint juice is very refreshing. The salads and the bread are very fresh, the bread served warm, crusty but soft inside just as it should be.
