Souk Madinat Jumeirah: Breathtaking surroundings, great food.

by colin_bramso

Madinat Jumeirah is a stunning new complex of hotels, villas, shops, souks, restaurants, cafes. A great experience is to eat in the outdoor area of Souk Madinat, which the surrounding restaurants & cafes service. It overlooks the waterway and amphitheatre. You can order a full meal, or have just a coffee or a fruit juice. Mine, as always, is shish tawook, hommos, Arabic bread and salad plus lemon & mint juice, which I order from Al Makkan restaurant. Geina likes the variety of savoury snacks from Dome, which between 4 & 7 pm are three for the price of two.

Salsa: Good Mexican at Dubai Marina

by colin_bramso

The best Mexican we've found so far. On the waterfront overlooking the million dollar yachts moored in the marina, stunning towers all around. There's a large outdoor area and a smaller indoor dining area. Shisha is available outside. The food is not really true Mexican, like all the franchises in Dubai it's the American version of Mexican food - I like my Mexican food with plenty of chilli and I've yet to find it in Dubai. Salsa is the best we've found so far. I like beef burritos and Geina likes quesadilla

The Spice Emporium: Real Thai food

by colin_bramso

The Spice Emporium has changed the concept from its original pan-Asian mixture to a specialist Thai restaurant. It's very much better, although I still don't like the modern pan-Asian mixture of the decor - but the food is excellent. They've brought Thai chefs in and they produce real Thai dishes, although for me not enough with the spiciness that I like. They work in open kitchens so you can watch your meal being prepare.Open Monday - Saturday 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, dress smart casual. Kra Prou, diced beef with hot basil leaves and chilli, roast duck with plum sauce, Thai fried rice, mixed vegetables in oyster sauce, Yum Nua

Al Makan: Excellent Arabic food, beautiful decor.

by colin_bramso

You can eat in the restaurant itself, just outside in the walkway of the souk or al fresco in the general eating area overlooking the waterway & amphitheatre.Inside is beautifully decorated in traditional Arabic style, the staff are friendly and efficient.Food is top quality, the prices are very reasonable, and much cheaper than the waterfront restaurants on the lower level of Madinat Jumeirah. Shish Taouk Irani, which is chicken tikka pieces marinated in saffron & yoghurt and grilled to perfection. Plus a dish of hommos. You also get a complimentary dish of olives & pickle and basket of Arabic bread. To go with the food I can recommend fresh lemon & mint juice.

Noodle Factory: Genuine Asian flavours

by colin_bramso

The menu is pan-Asian, with examples of Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, Thai, Japanese dishes, and the dishes we've tried have all had an authentic flavour. The restaurant is in Dubai Marina Mall and it has tables inside or outside overlooking the water.Service is good, you tick the items you want on the tear-off pad and give it to the waiter/ess.It has an open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs preparing your meal. Beef Char Kuey Chow, Chicken Kung Pao Chilli, Spicy Black Bean Beef with Ginger & Spring Onions, Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables, Vegetable Rice.

L' auberge: Lebanese cuisine, amazing value Friday buffet.

by colin_bramso

Located in one of the smaller shopping malls on Jumeirah Road, which is known locally as Beach Road. On the first floor, with a large inside area and an open-air terrace, from which you can watch the lunatic drivers!Well designed and decorated inside, good fast and friendly service and very good food. As always with the local restaurants, your meal includes complimentary olives & pickles and a bread basket. On Friday there is an amazing buffet for only AED50, which includes a big choice of fish & kebabs cooked freshly for you and a whole spit-roast lamb. We always order a dish of hommos plus shish tawouk, our favourite, which is marinated chicken pieces grilled on a skewer served with either rice or fries. Plus perhaps stuffed vine leaves and grilled halloumi cheese. Another of Geina's favourites is grilled hammour and L' auberge does it very well.My favourite drink is fresh lemon & mint...

Al Hallab: One of our favourite Arabic restaurants

by colin_bramso

Another of the restaurants by Ski Dubai in Mall of the Emirates, Al Hallab serves excellent Lebanese/Arabic dishes. As with the other restaurants here, there are inside and 'outside inside' seating areas. The food and service are excellent, service is fast and efficient.Like most Arabic restaurants you receive complimentary olives and a basket of freshly baked bread. We usually go for lunch and have a mezza selection - falafel, hommos, grilled haloumi cheese, stuffed vine leaves, kebbeh plus a plate of shish tawook. They make sharwama sandwiches which are as good as any in Dubai, which comes with coleslaw and fries, or you can have it without the bread as sharwama plate, which is just the seasoned meat with fresh coriander.I always have fresh lemon & mint juice. And of course a bottle of mineral water. I finish the meal with a Turkish coffee, which they do very well. The falafel are...

Al Dar: Arabic cuisine

by colin_bramso

Tucked away upstairs above a MacDonalds, Al Dar is a surprisingly large restaurant which serves top quality Arabic food. People in Dubai eat late, so you need to go after 9pm otherwise the place is almost empty with no atmosphere. But from about 8.30pm the customers start to trickle in and the atmosphere gets better as it fills up. Whenever we eat in Arabic restaurants we order more-or-less the same dishes. Here we like fried meat kebbeh, which is meat balls of minced lamb with herbs & spices and which Al Dar does very well - crispy on the outside, soft in the centre; grilled halloumi cheese, hommos and shish taouk, which is grilled chicken pieces which have been marinated in herbs and yoghurt.Like all Arabic restaurants, you also get complimentary olives & and bread basket. Al Dar is generous with the size of these, also adding Arabic pickles and there are three baskets of different...

Camoon: Waterfront Arabic...and more.

by colin_bramso

Part of the new and increasing retail activity at the southern end of Dubai Marina, Camoon is right on the waterfront near the southern outlet to the Arabian Gulf.Sitting outside overlooking the water and watching the boats cruise by is very relaxing and enjoyable. There are inside or outside dining areas, the restaurant is open 11am to midnight, offers shisha, wi-fi and a huge and inexpensive international menu. We've only tried the Arabic dishes and all were very good, so we assume the other types of cuisine will be good too. We have particular favourites from Lebanese menus which we usually choose. Camoon serves very good hommus, shish taouk, Lebanese mixed kebabs. To drink I also always order lemon with mint juice, it's another thing that Camoon does very well.In March 2011 the price for the juice, Lebanese mixed kebabs with hommos & pickles, a separate bowl of hommos plus a basket of...

China Times: Once our favourite Chinese restaurant

by colin_bramso

We've been here many l times, tried a variety of different dishes and all have been excellent and authentic Chinese.Be warned that the portions are very big, so don't order too many - although as with most Chinese restaurants you can take-away any that's left over.Staff are friendly, the service is good, the food comes quickly.Expect to pay from around AED20 to 50 per dish.UPDATE: Our last visit was in January 2011 and it was a big disappointment. The Chinese staff have all been replaced by Indian staff, the food was very different and no longer the authentic Chinese cuisine that it was before We have a number of favourites. For starters, the vegetable spring rolls and the crispy prawns, for main courses whole crispy roast chicken; Szechuan Hakka noodles; chicken sizzler, crispy duck with sesame plum sauce and a dish of stir fried vegetables with either black bean or oyster sauce.
