Salsa: Best Mexican we've found

by colin_bramso

None of the so-called Mexican restaurants we've tried to date use any chilli and as we lke our food spicy that's been a disappointment.Salso is the best we've found so far. The waiter said the burritos I ordered were 'medium', but being Filipino he knew about chilli and admitted it was actually very mild. He said they could spice it up for me. It wasn't particularly hot but far better than any I've had elsewhere. The other plus point was that the burrito didn't come smothered in creamy sauces and melted cheese as all the other restaurants serve up.Location is great too, on the busy waterfront at Phase One of Dubai Marina. Service was good, friendly, knowledgeable.Sheesha is available for the smokers. I like beef burritos while Geina tries something different. At Salsa she had steak a la Mexicana (details on the restaurant's website menu). Both are served with Mexican rice and refried...

Basilico: Great location for Italian food

by colin_bramso

A typical restaurant in Dubai Marina with indoor, indoor/outdoor and fully outdoor dining areas. A very big menu including antipasti, salads, soups, risotto, veal, chicken, seafood & vegetarian dishes, over thirty different pasta choices, about twenty-five different pizzas. The inside is designed as though you're sitting outdoors in an Italian village piazza with houses around it, an unusual design for a restaurant which makes a pleasant atmosphere. Sitting outside you're looking over the million dollar yachts across to the 5 star hotels and apartments. Risotto Con Porcini, wild mushrooms in a creamy sauce and Pollo Ricotta e Spinacci, breaded chicken breast stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach, served with vegetables. As the restaurant isn't in a hotel it doesn't serve alcohol. Don't let that put you off though.

Summer Place: Genuine, excellent Chinese cuisine

by colin_bramso

The long-established Summer Palace has been redesigned with modern decor and the name changed slightly to Summer Place. The menu hasn't changed, thankfully, because it's very good and includes dishes not usually found in restaurants outside places like Hong Kong and the food and service are excellent.Summer Place is in the Metropolitan Hotel, so alcohol is available. A dish that we haven't found for years, and a favourite of ours, is deep fried shredded beef. This is very thin small strips of beef fried until crunchy, served with thinly sliced mixed vegetables in a slightly spicy chilli sauce. Another favourite is called here aromatic crispy duck (but is usually called Peking duck). This is crispy-skin roast duck which you put in small thin bread pancakes with some finely sliced cucumber & spring onion and hoi sin sauce.

Don Corleone: One of the best Italian restaurants

by colin_bramso

A popular restaurant for nearly 20 years, which is a recommendation in itself. Located in the Dubai Metropolitan Hotel, which means you can have a glaqss of wine with your food, with indoor and outdoor dining areas. The outdoor is particularly pleasant, overlooking the garden with its greenery & beautiful bouganvillea.Inside, the white walls and red & white check tablecoths are perfect but the ceiling with its greenery & Chianti bottles is a bit over-the-to. However, the atmosphere, service and in particular the food more than compensate. All are excellent, the pasta is home-made. My favourites are risotto with asparagus & smoked salmon, a creamy risotto with plenty of both asparagus and top-quality smoked salmon and osso bucco.

Pax: Italian fine dining

by colin_bramso

A beautifully designed & furnished restaurant on the 24th floor of the Dusit hotel, with views of the city lights. The floor is devoted to restaurants, which is rather nice. Champagne Lounge for drinks & snacks is central and around it are Benjarong Royal Thai, Californian Coffee Shop, Pax.Pax offers a choice of eating at normal size tables, high tables with big stools or lower tables with armchairs.Service is five star, the food is excellent quality, the menu isn't particularly extensive but there's a good selection including hot and cold small snacks, which you can order like tapas/mezza. There are soups, pizza, pasta, risotto, veal and so on. The 'tapas' cost between AED16 & 30 each, risotto is AED60-75.The wine is expensive, but that's normal in Dubai's five-star hotels. For example, Rosemount Cabernet Sauvignon which retails at AED38 in Australia is AED250 here. We like risotto,...

Capanna Nuova: Italian on the beach

by colin_bramso

One of the great dining locations in Dubai, in the landscaped gardens of Dubai Marine Beach Resort and right on the ocean. There's a large indoor restaurant but in the cooler months the large terrace built over the private beach or the first floor balcony are the places to be.It's a 5-star hotel and the service & everything else reflect that. Osso Bucco is my favourite and this is about the best I've ever had, Rissoto with wild mushrooms & truffle oil or seafood rissoto. The various home-made pasta dishes are also excellent and so are the pizzas. The main courses range from about Dh50 up to about Dh100. Naturally, drinks are expensive, Dh36 for pina colada, Dh25 for dry Martini, Dh30 to Dh50 for a glass of wine, Dh18 for a bottle of mineral water for example.

Bake Inn Cafe: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, AND a Bakery!

by Escadora7

The Bake Inn Cafe consists of a bakery and a restaurant, both designed in "mexican casa" style. Walking in, you will first notice the large glass counter, displaying a huge variety of baked goods, including bread, cakes, and all sorts of goodies. On the other side is the restaurant, with a cozy and inviting European-style atmosphere and friendly (mostly Filipino and Indian) staff. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (mostly continental European foods), as well as Croissants, Pizza, and Fatayers. Overall the restaurant is very inviting, cozy, and clean, with friendly service, and good food. We had cream of chicken soup and lentil soup, and shared the fish-platter. The food was excellent and plenty for 2.

Shamiana: Best Butter Chicken in Dubai

by Escadora7

Shamiana is the Hindi word for a wedding tent where food is served. This is not really a restaurant, but it is a fast-food place in the Bur Juman food court. You go up to the counter, place your order, and when your number is called you go and pick up the food on a tray, served on plastic plate with plastic utensils. Not quite the exquisitely fine dining of a top restaurant, but the food is delicious. Besides the Bur Juman, Shamiana is also at the following locations:Deira City Centre Dubai Knowledge VillageAl Reef MallIbn Battuta Mall Butter Chicken. No - it's not really chicken soaked in butter, but it is chicken in a buttery curry sauce. Served with Naan and rice, this is simply delicious.

Al Reef Bakery: Zataar - A taste of Lebanon

by Escadora7

Al Reef is a lebanese bakery and fast food restaurant. It's a great place to go for a midnight snack after bar-hopping (open 24 hours). You order at the counter, when they call you, you pick up your food, and then you get settled in the orange plastic-chairs. Bright light will guarantee that any romance that might have built up throughout the evening will be destroyed. BUT - the food is good. Unless that is of course, you do what I did: let Ash order for you. YIKES!!!! Zataar - a typical lebanese flat-bread, piled up with goodies, folded, and then baked. Our friends ordered meat-filled, which was delicious; hot with cheese melting all over the place (mouth watering from the thought of it). For us, Ash, the local expert, ordered authentic lebanese food; it was, well - WEIRD! (see picture)
