Either side of the Creek, the heart of Dubai, there are two of the older shopping areas - around Al Fahidi Street in Bur Dubai and between the gold souk & Naif Road in Deira. I prefer them to the ultra-modern shopping malls, the atmosphere is so much better, and there are plenty of bargains to be had, whatever you're buying. They are also much better than Karama, which is much over-hyped and is a soul-less, boring area to walk around.
Al Fahidi Street runs parallel to the Creek, just walk up to it through the side streets. Explore them too, they're fascinating and perfectly safe to wander around.
What to buy: Dubai has products from all over the world, with an amazing selection of just about anything. In particular, there is huge choice and bargain prices for gold jewellery, textiles, shoes, electronics, watches, clothing.
What to pay: Prices are very low, and you should always bargain over the price in the smaller shops and souks.
I had decided I wanted one of those special beautiful dresses the woman were wearing and after walking about our neighbourhood for a while, we let ourselves be "kipnapped" into the store Sheetal Trdg. Br. OK sari shop, where the owner was delighted we chose his store and therefore couldn´t stop taking one beautiful top and dress after another down from the shelves.
I only bought one top, but what a top :O). and of couse I also should have lagings, so after a hard bargain I got a "kurti" (also known as a tunic) and lagings for 350 dh.
What to buy: If you are around Bur Dubai waterfront and Al Fahidi street, go for the textiles stores and also the tailor shops, where you can get a neat shirt made.
The Al Fahidi street lies at the heart of the Bur Dubai souk.

This is the street to go to for all your electronic-goods shopping, including cameras.
What to buy: You'll find all the major brands, but make sure you look around before you buy: The same products are available in lots of shops, and prices can differ dramatically.
What to pay: Bargaining is expected so don't be shy.
