The fastest and cheapest way to get around Dubai is by Taxi. They are all around and it's fairly easy to wave one down quickly.
Most of the taxi-drivers are either Indian or Pakistani, and they are very friendly. Many have told me their story (in broken English): they are here to save money so that they can afford a house or get married when they return home. Or they need the money to send to their families for medical costs or schooling. Most all of them can't wait to return to their homeland...

Taxis are very convenient, as this is a country of petrolium. It's much better to take a taxi then to rent a car, because it costs less and there is a big traffic in Dubai and it's not easy to find a parking.
Yes Taxi is the best selection for transportation because there are no good buses and minibuses but there are a lot of taxis in the city. All of them clean, confortable and has got a air-condition, drivers speaking a good English, but you should choose a taxi as like in the picture: white&public taxi. If you have to go to somewhere in the early morning, it is so difficult to find out a taxi, so take their phone numbers.
It is 30 dirhem from airport to citycenter and it takes 18-25 dirhem in the city.
Now, normally in a new city, I won't take a taxi unless it's with a local. I'll doggedly stick to buses, trains and my own two feet. But...
We used both buses and taxis, but by the end of the trip were using nothing but taxis. We'd take abras from one side of the creek to the other and then a taxi the next 10 minutes home to the hotel.
Don't be afraid to use taxis here. They are the fastest way of getting around, not at all expensive, we didn't feel at all as if we were going to get ripped off (a common VT complaint in some cities). They use meters and we repeatedly took the same route and got charged the same amount each time.
It is a little more expensive in the evenings to take a taxi, but not by much.
Oh, and don't expect small talk from the drivers!
Dubai Taxi's are all metered, from Airport it start with AED 15 Dirhams, getting to City center/Diera cost around 28~30 Dirhams and to Jumera Beach Aprx 50~55 Dirhams depends on Traffic.
Within the City the Taxi meters starts from AED3 and getting to the Airport is a bit cheaper, from Diera around 15 Dirhams
All vehicles are New and Airconditioned, the drivers are well educated and good knowledge of streets/locations and absolutly safe, it can be called any time of the day with out any extra charges
There's no trains or subway in Dubai..as yet (they are planning though) so taxi is the best way to move around. There also buses that take you around but not as convenience as taxis. No extra surcharge after midnight.
Generally taxis are very well organized, clean, efficient and by far not expensive, but the taxi driver from the airport somehow managed to charge me 35 when it should be 15. But apart from this, very good impression overall.
Al Ghazal Taxi
Dubai Transportation Corporation
Gulf Radio Taxi
These are the main Taxi provider in Dubai , all are excellent and well trained especially Dubai Transportation Corporation (yellow camry cars) you will see them every where, and the good thing is the most of the taxi drivers knows how to interact in English.
The car is king in Dubai: The best way to get around is by taxi or rental car. There is a local bus service, but buses are very crowded and not air-conditioned. Walking is a good option in certain areas, but the weather is generally too hot for you to cover long distances on foot.
I really liked this idea..u can pay the driver by you're credit card..but not all taxi's have one!..
