Sharijah by dr.firas What can money do...!!! although Sheikh Zaied will and love to his country, the mentality of that big leader *RIP* was to make his country the best in everything, I was fascinated to see sky crabs in an Arabic country, with green views in the middle of the desert, big shopping centre, and everything you dream or could ever imagine, clean streets, super technologies and etc... this makes UAE a pure pride of every Arab Leave a Comment

by traveldave Fujairah faces the Indian Ocean, and is the only emirate not located on the Persian Gulf. It is separated from the other emirates by the Hajar Mountain range. The mountains served to protect Fujairah from foreign domination and outside tribal influences. Its capital, Fujairah city, was founded in the late eighteenth century when the ruling sheikh established a fort between the coast and mountains. During British rule of the Trucial Coast, Fujairah was considered to be part of Sharjah emirate. Sheikh Homad, a former ruler of Fujairah, engaged the British Royal Navy in an attempt to gain independence from Sharjah. This caused the British to bombard Fujairah city for 90 minutes. It was not until 1925 that Fujairah was acknowleged as the seventh emirate. Nowadays, Fujairah is a popular destination for daytrippers from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as foreign tourists drawn by its diving sites and natural beauty. Leave a Comment

by traveldave The Old Town of Ras al-Khaimah was first settled in about 1500 at the mouth of Khor Ras al-Khaima (khor is Arabic for "creek" or "lagoon"). It is the northernmost of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates. Since its founding, Ras al-Khaimah has been ruled by the Qawasim family, who claims to be descended from the Prophet Mohammed. Due to its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz and at the mouth of a protected port, Ras al-Khaimah became a maritime and trading power. In the early 1800s, Ras al-Khaimah was involved in several naval skirmishes with the British Royal Navy. The Qawasim were labeled by the British as "pirates," and the city of Ras al-Khaimah and the other Qawasim ports of Sharjah, Umm al-Quwain, and Ajman were razed in 1820. The General Treaty of Peace signed between the British and Qawasim was the start of the British protectorate over all of the Trucial Coast. Nowadays, Ras al-Khaimah is a little off the beaten path. It is one of the poorest emirates, and is not developing as rapidly as some of the other emirates. This is primarily because there are no oil reserves in Ras al-Khaimah. However, sandy beaches, resort hotels, and rugged mountains are increasingly attracting tourists to the emirate. Leave a Comment

Green Guide to the Emirates by sachara When you travel to the countryside of the UAE, like to know about the flora, fauna and fossils, find your way on the off-the-beaten track places and roads or like to do some hiking, the Green Guide to the Emirates, written by Marycke Jongbloed (founder of the Arabian Leopard Trust) can be a good help. This guide helped us to find our way and some interesting places around Al-Ain. It was also a big help, when we made a short-cut between Al Ain and Hatta taking the road through Oman. The UAE maps were blank for this part and nobody could tell us exactly how to drive. We bought the guide in the Intercontinental Hotel in Al Ain and payed a rather high price, 75 dirham. We had the edition of 1998, so some information can be dated. Leave a Comment

Gold shopping in Dubai by Faiza-Ifrah Do some serious shopping, because the entire country is duty-free and things are very economically priced. Else, do window shopping in one of the most beautiful architecturally designed shopping malls. The ladies in the pix seem to be interested in buying Gold at Sharjah's Gold Souk or perhaps window shopping only.
Participation in the Family Fun Drive in the Desert - 2000. This is an annual event held late January for families, who take their 4 wheel drives into the deserts of the country. See pictures elsewhere. Leave a Comment

SALE!!!!!! by bakpakchik (Dubai Shopping Festival) Sale: the word encapsulates the Dubai Shopping Festival experience. For the whole of the city (which includes residents of Dubai AND those of all over the world that flock to Dubai in droves during the Festival and turn the city into one big traffic jam) and for little old me that never was able to resist a good sale. My latest pruchase - and definitely not the last one - my new digital camera. I went camera happy with my Nikon CoolPix 5700 (that neatly wiped out a whole month's worth of earnings) and I don't regret it for one second. It's been exactly seven hours now that the camera has been in my hands and I have stopped only now to post this on VT. This picture also says something about my rather sad obsession with mannequins. I'm obsessed on a rather philosophical level. Read on ... Leave a Comment

Color me ... pink by bakpakchik A slightly more arty photograph the hte Bur Juman mannequins. Ask me - I have stacks and stacks of mannequin photos. This one will do - considering I am still learning the ropes of the new 5700. Those feathers .... take me to another country. Is this Dubai? Leave a Comment

by bakpakchik Going back home, I can't resist shooting the lights that adorn every possible surface of the city. I love lights. Green, yellow, blue .. any color. Every color. Lots and lots of it. And why not? My name is the hindi word for 'lights'. So let there be light .... Leave a Comment

by bakpakchik Reality check: yes, it's Dubai. That's why you see a scantily clad lady in a billboard infront of two modestly covered women. Dubai is the ultimate melting pot. It's where the mini-skirt walks alongside the veil. And that's what I love most about Dubai - you get ot be who you want to be. Leave a Comment

Lady in .... blue? by bakpakchik Yeah and a hell lot more of an expensive one! Bur Juman - despite it's partiality towards bizarre promotion campaigns like the one in this picture - is not my favorite Dubai mall. That would be the Deira City Centre. Yes ... it's like being back in good old Karachi. Ah, those crowds and those hordes of rowdy young boys. The display you see here is the true Bur Juman experience. Leave a Comment
