It's a very modern city so suitcases are fine, but if you're heading off on a desert safari a small rucksack might be of use for cameras, sunglasses etc.

Out in the desert expect to get covered in sand and if you leave your vehicle you'll be knee deep in no time so take sturdy shoes. It's windy up on the sand dunes too so even though it's not cold, long trousers are advisable as sand blowing at speed is quite painful. If you've got goggles of any description that's a bonus too!!!

If you're out and about in Dubai any time of the day between March and November it can be very hot and sticky so cool, loose clothing is vital. It rains very rarley so umbrellas are not essential to pack - unless you want to shade yourself from the sun!
However, strong air-conditioning at many places means it's advisable to pack a jumper or at least a long-sleeved shirt.

Between December and February the temperature and humidity does drop, but not enough to warrant taking thermals. It's more like a nice warm summer than the earlier scorching temperatures.

Most things are readily available, but if you're on prescribed drugs take them with you as medical care can be expensive.
Travel sickness is also a big problem on the desert safaris as the vehicles bounce around a lot. Even if you don't remember to bring any into the country, buy some from a pharmacy before you set off if you think you might suffer.
Sun cream is essential as the sun can be extremely fierce, but if you run out there's plenty on the shelves of supermarkets and pharmacies.

Films, disposable cameras, processing and even new cameras are readily available in Dubai as are batteries to fit most makes and models.

Beaches with golden sands are plentiful in the UAE.
Although many areas of beach are cordoned off for use by hotels, there are plenty of others available for public use.
However, don't assume that if you pay to go into a designated beach park you won't get hassled. On the occasions that I went, we were accosted by Egyptians, Arabs and guys from Lebanon. If they ask you if you're Russian they usually mean 'are you a prostitute?', but don't get upset by that - some people seem to ask everyone!
