Nothing is better than that, was my first time ever in a real desert, you must go to a very famous place in UAE called Big Red, why Big Red because the color of the Dune is red in a fantastic way, it is a rare place where a person can not only explore a real beauty of emptiness, but also to think and meditate and have extra fun and adrenaline!

The United Arab Emirates is located in the northeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, and about 65 per cent of its territory is covered by the Arabian Desert. The Arabian Desert in turn is part of the Saharo-Arabian Desert, the most extensive arid region in the world.

Many people imagine sand dunes when they think of the Arabian Desert. Although a large part of the desert does consist of sand dunes, the desert also includes mountains and hills, deep valleys (or wadis), flood plains and alluviums, coastal scrub, salt flats, and salt marshes.

And the dunes themselves vary, depending on which part of the desert they are located. Many are white calcareous dunes, but most are red ferrusiliceous dunes, such as those pictured here.

Travelers to the United Arab Emirates can visit the desert, usually with a tour company specializing in off-road adventures or sand-skiing. I visited most of the desert habitats while searching for birds.

    Late winters at Mina Siyahi

Since most tourists in the UAE will land in Dubai, so here I will only list some beaches that they can chose from a number of what we have:

    1. Jumeirah Beach: At Jumeirah Road in Bur Dubai is located in a park named Jumeirah Beach Park. It is the busiest of all the beaches and can get crowded on holidays and in the evenings. Nearby attractions include Dubai Zoo and Mercatto Mall.

    2. Mumzar Park and Beach: Located in Deirah Dubai, the Park offers other attractions like watersports, bbq, walkways, children playarea, roller blade ring, etc.

    3. Beaches by Seaview Road, Sharjah: This is an extensive stretch of sand that offers wonderful look at the watersports, 4 wheel driving, as well as beautiful views of Sharjah skyline on one side and of Dubai's Mumzar Beach Park on the other.

    4. Mina Siyahi: 25 kms from Dubai when traveling towards Abu Dhabi and in the vicinity of Burju Arab Hotel. While the construction goes on around the area in full swing, this beautiful and less crowded stretch is still available for a day off (see the picture).

  • Badiyah, old mosque - United Arab Emirates
    Badiyah, old mosque
    by sachara
Badiya is one of the oldest towns in the Gulf.
Excavations in the area have shown that the place of the town is inhabited since the 3th millenium BC.
In Badiyah you can find the oldest mosque of the UAE ( 640 AD) just along the mainroad from Fujairah to Dibba, north of the village.
The mosque is a small white-washed building of stone, mud-brick and gypsum. The mosque is still in use.
On the hillside above and behind the old mosque we saw some ruined watchtowers.

  • Dibba - United Arab Emirates
    Dibba
    by sachara
Dibba is the most northern town at the eastern coast of the UAE.
The town Dibba is divided in three parts. The southern part Dibba Muhallah is part of the Emirate Fujairah. Dibba al-Hisn is part of the Emirate Sharjah and Dibba Bayah is part of the Sultanate Oman. On old maps of the 16th century, this division was allready mentioned.
The border between the UAE and Oman is not signposted. Between the three parts are areas with palmtrees, but sometimes we didn't know in which part we were or how we could go (back) to the other part, because there were no signs. So we had to drive on our own orientation sense, looking to the Gulf and the surrounding mountains.
Within the many enclaves we passed, there were in general only signs to the towns within the same emirate (or to the capital, far away) and no signs to a nearby town in another emirate.
In Dibba al Hisn is an old fort, used by the police.
Excavations showed that the area was allready inhabited in 1000 BC.

From Hatta to Fujairah we could not take the shortest road to the east without a visa for Oman. So we made a detour, passing Al Dhaid. From here we decided to visit the Sharjah Desert Park. In the Arabian Wildlife Centre you can see the animals of the Peninsula. It's a nice spacious ariconditioned area. In one hall, where a desert landscape is created, you walk between the birds. In other parts of the centre you walk along huge windows and can see the animals outdoors. A leopard and an hyena had searched some shade just in front of these windows, making it a very close encounter.

  • Fujairah fort - United Arab Emirates
    Fujairah fort
    by sachara
Fujairah is the only emirate without territory at the Arabian Gulf, but has a strategic important location near the Street of Hormuz at the Gulf of Oman. Till 1952 Fujairah was part of the emirate of Sharjah and so the youngest emirate.
The long sandy beaches and the mountain ridges are characteristic for the coastline of the Gulf of Oman and so for the 90 KM long emirate.
In Fujairah town you will find beaches, parks, fountains, statues, souqs, a fishing harbour, shopping malls and the old town with a museum and fort.

In the Hatta open air heritage area we could visit allready some traditonal houses inside, like this beautiful room, for receiving guests.
It was also possible to climb to the top of the watchtower for a nice view over the valley.
There was also a functioning falaj, a traditional irrigation system. This falaj irrigated small green agricultural fields just below the heritage village.

In the more than 200 years old oasis village Hatta are still some traditional houses. They have started to transform the village into a "Tourist and Heritage Village" of the pre-oil era.
We could allready visit some restored houses in the open air heritage village area. We went there early in the morning.
Allthough Hatta has to be relatively cool for UAE standards, for us it was very hot.

    Kalba

South of Fujairah at the Gulf of Oman are the enclaves of the Sharjah Emirate, Kalba and Khor Kalba. Together they form a 10 KM long coastal town.
In the harbour of the traditional fishing village Kalba you can see the fishermen with their boats and nets. And you can see fishes drying in the sun.
Khor Kalba, more south, has the oldest and largest mangrove forest of the Emirates, just south of the lagoon.
There is a lot of birdlife around the lagoon. Because of the many crabs, the lagoon is also known as the crablake.
