Al-Qahira Fort sits on top of the hill overlooking Hajja and the surrounding area.
It was to protect the area which was rich in agriculture, and in a strategic position 120km from the red sea.
The Ottomans took it over and after they left Imam Yahir controlled the area from the fort and it became well known for its jail in the dungeon and the escape passage.
There is a British cannon outside, but the most interesting bit is the tiny gun room. Here are 2 walls of newspaper cuttings depicting historical events and news including the executions that took place in the fort, with pictures of those to be executed and the executioner.
More recent cuttings show photos of the current president and his son. All are in Arabic, and none are protected in any way so may well not last that long unless steps are taken to preserve them.
An incredible room of recent history.

The Old City is beautiful and well-preserved/restored. The walls and gates are intact. People are friendly, as elsewhere, The interesting thing is that there is hardly any commercial activity within the city walls. This lack of commercialism extends to the folks you meet: no-one is expecting to earn a rial off you.
