    Many people will try to start a conversation with you in shops, souqs or public transport. They even ask you some delicate or personal questions about your life, politics or religion. I was truthful and even asked back.

    Learn some basic Arabic before you go. I do not mean just greeting phrases but also numbers and how to say the name of your country in Arabic. You'll be asked your age and marital status on a casual everyday basis so be prepared with an answer. I recommend the truth though single people older than 25 are frowned upon.

    Visas

  • Citizens from many countries, including (all or most? check beforehand if you're from one of the newer member states!) EU member states, can obtain a visa at Sana'a International Airport. (Not sure if your passport needs to be valid at least six months after intended departure from Yemen, but better to err on the side of caution.) The cost is USD 30 (or 25 euros or 5500 rials). For children with their own passport the amount is the same. If they are entered into their parent's passport the fee is much lower (I believe USD 10 only). It is possible to pay in Euros - you'll get your change back in Yemeni rials. No need to worry about being overcharged or shortchanged. It's a very straightforward process, be it a bit time-consuming if you're at the back of a queue. For that reason, make sure to proceed directly to the visa counter - don't get in line for Immigration first! (Tip to get there quickly: when descending from your airplane there is a bus waiting for you. Go stand close to the door on the left, that is the driver's side. That way you'll be the first to leave the bus and enter the Arrivals Hall. Inside the Hall turn left and you'll see a counter marked "Visa". There is also a money exchange there, but no need to go there first: the visa officials accept Euros and possibly other important regional currencies like Saudi riyal.)
    If they ask where you'll be staying, name any hotel (e.g. Sheraton or Arabia Felix). If they ask who your travel agent is, name any one (e.g. ATG/Abu Taleb Group).
    They sometimes ask for a copy of your passport's holder page (the - nowadays usually plastic - page with your personal data). If you can't produce one, they'll make one for you, but that takes some time. In any case it's never a bad idea to have that copy with you, wherever you go.

    BMW on a Sunny Day

    People have told me that the best time to visit Yemen is between October and March. This is when the day time temperatures are normally pleasant and rain is usually infrequent. In summer from May to September, temperatures along coastal areas regularly exceed 40 C and the humidity is also very unpleasant. Moonsoon comes in March/April and again in August/September but it'll rarely disrupt your travels. In fact, it is a preferable time to visit because the countryside is at its most attractive ! It is the time when tourism picks up again. From 20th December to 10th January you might get some trouble finding room in a decent hotel.

    Original Passport valid for at least 6 months after date of departure required by all.

    Visas are required by all except:

  • My Yemeni Visa - Yemen
    My Yemeni Visa
    by Pakistaniguy
    Pakistani Nationals need a Visa for entering Yemen. You cannot apply/initiate visa by yourself in the Embassy. There has to be someone in Yemen who applys for your visa in ministry of foreign affairs and gets it for you. The ministry sends the confirmation to your relative embassy and then u go to your embassy for applying the Visa. I did the same. My uncle applied for my my visa, got my visa and sent the confirmation to Yemeni Embassy in Islamabad. I went to the Embassy. They told me that i have to fill the two forms. Put two photos with white background. Get a medical certificate after being checked for various disease from a particular medical center only. So, After filling the form, i went to the medical center to get myself tested. I got all-clear report Allhamdulliah next morning, so, i took that report to the embassy and applied for the Visa. I got my Visa exactly after 3 hours! The Visa fees was 25 US$ for single entry Yemeni Visitor Visa.

    The national Telephone system is controlled by the government monopoly, Yemen Communications Company, commonly known as Tele Yemen. There are numerous call centers in every city and town of Yemen. Most of them are open daily from 8 am to 12 midnight !

    The standard charge for anywhere in Europe, Americas and Australia is about 270YR per minute.

    Keep in mind that there are no often no offpeak periods with discounted rates.

    If you are looking for a tourist visa, then look up on the internet at http://www.yemenembassy.org which is maintained by Yemeni Embassy in Washington D.C. I've come to know that other Nationals from western countries can apply for One month tourist visa in the nearest Yemeni Embassy. You'll need to provide your original passport valid for 6 months even after the expiration of your visa, one passport size photo and visa fees of 50 US$ single and 100 US$ double entry visas. You can also apply for Yemeni Visa in U.A.E, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Oman. Another way of doing is to contact a travel agent in Yemen and fill- the guarantee so that he can take your responsibility and arrange a visa for you. But then you should book a tour with them once u are there.

    Arabic is pretty hard to learn; in Yemen, there is the additional problem that few people speak English and even those in the travel business do not always speak good English. A few words & phrases in Arabic can be helpful to get along:

    "salaam" or "marhaba" = good day
    "ma-as-salama" = good-bye
    "keif halak?" = how are you ?
    "mumkin" = Can I, May I ?
    "mumkin ßura?" = Can I take a photo ?
    "bikam hatha" = How much? (th like "they")
    "aiwa" = yes
    "la" = no
    "chalass" = enough, stop it
    "mafisch" = nothing, there is nothing
    "fi" = there is .. or as a question: do you have?
    "jalla" = let`s go
    "schukran" = thank you
    "min fadlak" = please
    "tammam" = good
    "mumtass" = excellent
    "djamila" = beautiful

    Although I have wanted to visit Yemen for a long time, I had decided to visit India this trip. I'd visited Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt in short order and part of me wanted a break from Arabic culture. So I schlepped off to the Indian High Comission in the Aldwych. Blow me down, it was the Buddha's birthday and the place was all shut up. Panic. It was wednesday and I wanted to book a flight by the weekend. Well, Yemen it had to be. I took myself off to the Yemeni embassy in Cromwell Road.

    You can in theory get a visa on arrival at Sana'a airport. But apparently there have been incidents of independant travellers being refused a visa: I didn't want to take the chance. And the Yemeni embassy says that one of the visa requirements is a letter from the tour company organising your trip: the other is a return air ticket.
    I had neither, but this didn't worry the man behind the desk.
    'When do you want to go?'
    'As soon as possible'
    'Yemenia flies to Sana'a from London on Wednesdays and Fridays. How are you paying?'
    'Cash'
    He produced a book of paying-in slips from a drawer and filled one in for me. I had to go to the bank and pay my £25 into their account. And return on Friday between 12 and 2 to pick up the visa.

    The only other visa applicant was an orthdox jew, conducting his business in Arabic. Welcome to Yemen.
