chew qat! It is the best way...

by maykal

chew qat! It is the best way to meet the Yemeni people and understand more about their culture. You can't avoid qat in Yemen - even the president is rumoured to chew with members of his parliament. After midday prayers, most of the men turn their thoughts to qat, where to buy it from, where to chew it, and who to chew it with, and by about 3pm nearly everyone will have a wad of qat leaves stuffed in their cheek. They chew in houses, in shops, in the streets, and of course you can't travel anywhere without a few leaves to while away the hours. Qat is not restricted to men only, as women also chew, but mainly behind closed doors. Most visitors to Yemen will be offered qat at some point during their trip, and will become the centre of attention if they accept.Qat is a mild narcotic on the same level as coffee, and the main effects are lack of sleep and loss of appetite, especially for those...

Yemenite money.

by schielen

Change your dollars into Yemenite money. The exchange rate is 127,5 Ryal for 1 US$ (1996!), and the largest denomination is 200 Ryal (more current are banknotes of 50 and 100 Ryal). After changing your dollars, you will be the proud owner of a plastic bag full of money. You put the money you think to use in a pocket of your shirt (folded with a rubber band around it). The rest you put anywhere in your luggage.

Qat-session

by schielen

Attend at least one qat-session. In the afternoon men come together in the nicest room of the house, the mafraj, usualy located at the top story of a house. Large quantaties of qat plants are availible. Still it is very apriciated that you bring a portion with you. Don't buy just any qat you see on the market, try to get some expert advice, since there are great differences in quality (and price!). The averidge man spents almost half of his salary on qat, which makes it the most importent economical item in the country. Every funduq has a mafraj, so when you are not invited in a house, you can organise your own qat-session. The inn-keeper can advise you on where to buy for what price. The effect is for people who are used to more potent drugs as alcohol or worse hardly noticeable. The atraction is more a social then a fysical one. You spent a relaxed afternoon chewing and talking,...
