QAT!!

by Mcclovis

I resisted chewing qat as much as I could but after a month curiosity took the better of me and I relented. Whatever the Yemenis say, qat is a drug. And it is found everywhere. To chew or not to chew is up to you. I chewed only once. I was with a group of Yemeni friends sitting comfortably in a mafrag; listening to songs and religious readings; smoking sheesha; sipping water; inhaling incense and perfume and chatting or just relaxing.I only chewed two handfuls of best quality qat (red tinged young leaves). The taste at first was horribly bitter but later I found myself popping qat in my mouth without thinking. The men around me all had bulging cheeks and a rather glazed look. I tried very hard not to swallow any but was not totally successful. I lost count of the time and I forgot that I had not eaten that evening. The effect on me was slow in coming but rather impressive. It did make me...

WOMEN: they are visible for the men but for us women you will have contact with them so don't be afraid to stop when you meet a group of women going on work on the fields or going downtown… they are as much interested as you to discuss with you and understand how you live. If you have the opportunity to be invited by your driver Ali, his wife's friends will come to visit you and will take of their veils and surely you will live wonderful moments with themDJAMBLIA AND KALACHNIKOV: the djamblia is the most important thing on the traditional Yemenite clothe, also a dance is consecrated to this dagger. The djamblia is the symbol of the passage to the adult life and it has still a special place on the Yemenite society: if you do a misdeed the police will take it time you pay for your fault. The djamblia sign the social position on the Yemenite society and give prestige to one who wear it: the...

Show Respect

by tini58de

The Yemen is a strictly Islamic country, so one should respect their customs! This involves proper clothing, attitudes towards men and women, the use of the right hand only and other things! Every guide book will tell you more about it - and do read it properly!

by Dick_Loudon

Pretty conservative Moslem country so dress conservatively, use your right hand, don't stare at women or men (they all carry AK-47 machine guns); careful about drinking alcohol--do that at your hotel; don't chew the Qat leaf, a mild narcotic. This photo shows fishermen in the city of Hodeida; we spent a great day with them and they were good company.

Don't come to Yemen for a boozy, sunbathing trip. Alcohol is not available (sorry, that's a lie, it is available for a price if you know where to look, but I wouldn't recommend it as drinking is not a very Yemeni thing to do and you won't 'meet the people' that way), and no-one wears shorts or sleeveless shirts. Most Yemeni women wear a headscarf and the Sana'ani trend is also to wear a veil (in Aden it is noticeably more relaxed - not as many veils though most wear the hejab/headscarf). This does not mean that foreign women must wear a headscarf and a veil, but it would be better if they cover up everything apart from face, hands and ankles. While tourism is still fairly uncommon in Yemen, there is not the hassle that you find in other Arab countries (e.g. Egypt or Jordan), so when most people try to talk to you, it is entirely innocent with no ulterior motive. Of course there are...

by schielen

Yemenite people are all Muslim. Although there is much understanding for foreign cultures, some things should be given serious consideration. Not covering arms and legs is not apriciated (for women and men!).Drinking alcohol (if you insist) should be restricted to places where there are no Yemenites.
