Best Fresh Grilled Fish

by rie707

Excellent local non-fancy restaurant. We went three times in 6 days. The meal is simple and good. Yoy pick the fish you want upon entering the restaurant. They only have one type - don't know what kind of fish it is - but you choose according to size and you can check if it is fresh (they are very fresh in my experience). You can choose between two different types of marinades: a spicy marinade or a cumin marinade. They will grill the fish and bring it to your table with hot baladi bread. Eat it with your fingers and savour the taste! We paid between 1,200 to 1,700 rials for two (between US$6-US$9)

General Advice: Restaurants in Yemen

by MichaelFalk1969

Many restaurants in Yemen are not recognizable as such to a western tourist. A restaurant is usually a small room with a few tiny tables and benches, a newspaper as a tablecloth, and very different standards of cleanliness. It is a different thing with the hotels, but don`t expect haute cuisine there either. The food though is usually tasty and delicious (especially ful and fassulja) and very cheap, but as there is no variety in the menu and non-yemeni restaurants are practically non-existent outside Sanaa, you will sooner or later long for something different.

Grill-houses: Fresh grill

by hydronetta

Not listed in guidebooks, grill-houses are an alternative for having a typical but delicious meal. You can either buy your fresh fish from the market or buy it locally and have it grilled. Try it!! Unforgettable experience. Specially the newspaper tablecloth!

Street bakery: Bakeries

by hydronetta

Let your nose guide you :-)Bread (in different forms and tastes) is essential to Yemeni diet. It always comes along with any meal of the day.But it can be irresistible when it comes fresh out of the oven in local traditional bakeries like this one in the heart of old Sana'a city

GASTRONOMIA: GASTRONOMIA

by grazy56

FOOD: FOOD

FOOD:do not expect to French cooking but some good surprises also in small restaurants far away of our standards. You will eat many fresh or dry vegetables. Fresh fish only near the sea and on Sana'a. the basis of the alimentation is the bread make with different flours: corn, wheat, Indian millet, barley, millet… you will eat also the famous soup called salta , beef, sheep, goat, chicken and others dishes prepared with vegetables. On the restaurants you will never meet women except if the restaurants as a room only for women , so don't be surprise if people will look at you! You will find everywhere mineral water and sodas. Tea is a national beverage often perfumed with different spices. Yemenite people are fond of qishr who is made with a part of the coffee grain. On Yemen it's strictly forbidden to drink alcohol. NEVER drink alcohol or beer on the streets, this will be considered as a...

Khalil Al-Shaibani Restaurant: Fish!

by nartjies

Sumi and I came by late afternoon so the staff were busy cleaning but they gave us a table in the corner and entertained us by slipping and sliding on the soapy water puddles. The fish was very good! It was braaied(barbecued) whole with eyes and teeth, sumi refused to eat cos the fish was looking at her. The ghubz (bread) that came with was huge, almost served as a table cloth it was that big. And whereas other places would give sweets after a meal, here they gave us bananas.
