We ate at hotel restaurants...

by Dick_Loudon

We ate at hotel restaurants and had the honor of being taken to a private house for dinner one evening. If you are invited to a private house for a meal, it's a real treat. Large platters in the middle of the circle of men (all the women work in the kitchen and you never see them). the lamb, of course, saffron rice, and the flat breads right from the oven.

adel_bakhwar's Restaurant Tip

by adel_bakhwar

Yemeni hotel restaurants serve both Western & Oriental dishes, particularly Indian & Chinese. Few independent restaurants serving international & Arab cuisine. Seafood particularly recommended, as is haradha. Illegal to buy alcohol for a citizen of Yemen.Main meal of day is lunch, eaten without implements, using bread to scoop up food. Salta, national dish, highly-spiced stew of chicken or lamb with lentils, chickpeas, beans & coriander, served on rice. Shurba a stew, but with more soup-like consistency, of lentils (shurba bilsan), fenugreek (hilba) or lamb (shurba wasabi). Bread in several varieties, including ruti bought from shops, khubz tawwa made at home & lahuh, a pancake made from sorghum, eaten on special occasions. Bint al sahn is popular dessert, consisting of sweet bread dipped into honey & clarified butter. Most people drink very sweet tea called shay, served in small...

I don't have any favourite restaurants in Yemen, because most of them are pretty much the same. Yemeni men use restaurants as a place to eat, not to socialise, and on no occasion did I stay in a restaurant longer than it took to finish my meal. I say 'Yemeni men' because it is unheard of for a woman to enter one of these establishments, even for foreign women. Salteh...this is the national dish of Yemen, and quite unusual. It is a sort of stew made from meat (usually goat or lamb), potatoes and topped with a strange green fenugreek sauce. Salteh is concocted in a huge pot, normally at the entrance of the restaurant, and served in a metal bowl on a metal table, to ensure that it keeps boiling as you eat. It is extremely hot, in both senses of the word. Fahseh is a type of salteh, using 'flat meat' rather than lumps, and is considered a better version. You eat it with bread bought from...

Everywhere you can find small...

by schielen

Everywhere you can find small restaurants. Probibly the general time you spend here is 20 minutes. The food is cooked in the 'kitchen', a corner in the room. The menu items are written on the wall, in Arabic. You go into the kitchen and point out what you want. It is already well-cooked, so you get your plate instantly. After you have finished, you pay and leave. There are no special starters or desserts.Only Yemenite men use the restaurants. The women eat at home. Western tourists (male and female) are (very) welcome. Rice with vegetables. Always eat bread, it absorbs the fat so your stomach does not get upset.
