Socotra is a perfect place for those who like trekking.

All our programs offer trekking routes that allow you to get to know better the island’s nature and inhabitants. We adjust our programs to the time of your coming. If you come after a monsoon season we would recommend you to walk through wadis full of natural water pools. In the hottest time of the year it is good to trek in Haghier Mountains. There are various trekking routes you can choose depending on your walking experience. The routes may take from one hour to two weeks.

For those who want to see the inland Socotra we offer trekking routes backed up by camels. You can agree itineraries lying through Socotra’s “tourist” places and trekking rates beforehand. The most popular routes - Hadiboh-Dixam (3-4 days), Rush-Matiaf (2-3 days), Hadiboh-Noget (7-10 days).

Over much of routes trekking rates are usually low. Camels are usually used to carry your personal things, water and provisions. So you can fully enjoy picturesque sceneries and breathtaking views. You will stay overnight in tents and enjoy meals cooked for you by Socotran guides.

Trekking activities will allow you to watch the island’s nature more closely and to make great photos. Besides, you will be able to see the places not accessible by cars.

  • Freediving in Socotra

    by Denis_Romanov Updated Sep 28, 2010

Underwater hunting on Socotra is strictly prohibited by law. But nobody has anything against free diving and spinning.

For free diving we would recommend the whole northern coast of Socotra where it is quite easy to enter the sea. Here, the sea floor is made of volcanic rocks covered with coral features. The visibility is average. Sea currents are also possible, which may be very strong in some places.

When travelling by boat from Qalansiya to Shuab Bay you can make a stop at one of numerous coves formed by the rocks falling in the sea.

We would recommend those who like snorkeling to take a diving mask and a snorkel to Socotra. It is only possible to rent snorkeling equipment in DiHamri Camping, however, the underwater world of this place is not to be much to explore.

For free divers we arrange trips to Darsa, Samha and Abd al Kuri islands, were you can meet big schools of mantas. Here is one of the fishiest places of the Archipelago. Except the underwater world these islands are also famous for their unique flora and fauna. Such trips are possible early October and in the period from the end of February to April.

  • Diving in Socotra

    by Denis_Romanov Written Sep 28, 2010

The best time for diving on Socotra is the period from September to October and from March to May, when wind falls and the sea calms down.

We have pleasure in organizing diving tours for you on Socotra. We offer you to take advantage of professional knowledge of Fouad Naseeb, the only certified dive-master on the island, who has been studying the Archipelago’s undersea world for many years. He is the author of Socotra marina blog.

One of the most interesting diving sites is the “Sunrise” wrack lying at a depth of 25-27 meters at the sandy bottom in Shuab Bay.

The “Sunrise” ship created an artificial reef almost in the very center of the bay, which sandy bottom and moderate depth (not more than 30 m) attracts countless numbers of sea dwellers. Here one should be careful of skates reaching up to 3 meter in diameter. The old fishing nets entangled in the ship’s gear also represent a danger to divers. Sometimes there are strong currents and low visibility. But in February-March the sea gets very calm and it is quite possible to watch tens of fish species schooling around the wrack.

This wrack is worth staying one more day in Shuab Bay to make a few dives.

Other Socotra’s diving sites are also very interesting. The most prominent ones are as follows:

    - Eastern Cape Ras Di Erissel is the place where numerous ships have been colliding with the rocks covered by the water area of a few square miles for centuries. These are an improper mapping of the island, strong winds and very heavy currents combined with a low visibility of this area that caused hundreds or maybe even thousands shipwrecks here. The whole of the shallow water area is covered with the fragments of ancient ships. There are also a few big recent and fairly preserved shipwrecks that remain insufficiently explored for the present. The place has 7 diving sites.

    - Dihamri Marine Protected Area is famous for a great variety of corals and fish species. It has five diving sites with the deepest dives up to 50 meters. Night dives are also possible.

    - Rosh Marine Protected Area is famous for a reef stretching for about 1 km off the coast. It has one big diving site with dives between 10 and 15 meters. Night dives are also possible.

    - Adho has 2 diving sites with dives up to 30 meters.

If you want to take a diving trip to Socotra it is advisable to book it in advance by the following address: book#socotra.info

  • Windsurfing & Kiting in Socotra

Socotra can be too dangerous for wave-riding, but it is an excellent place for measuring speed during a monsoon season....

from November to January you can use only kite (not so strong wind for windsurfing).

from February till May - usually no wind...

Maybe in the future we will organize a world speed competition on Socotra during summer time. )

Equipment: Very small board and 3.4 sail for summer time.
