Shahara

by tini58de

A trip to Shahara - in the wild landscape of the mountains is a true experience!!! I am not sure, if I would go there again (or if it were possible at all), but I am glad I survived the tour up in VERY old pickups driven by 15 year old boys.... and the way down, walking over steep paths and narrow bridges...

Everyone should see Wadi...

by maykal

Everyone should see Wadi Dhahr, and if they are in Sana'a, then they have no excuse for not seeing it as it is only a few miles away and no permit is required to visit it.First, you should go to the clifftops overlooking the valley, where on Fridays many wedding parties come to dance in traditional dress, waving their jambiyyas (daggers) around, having got married the day before.Down in the valley is Dar al-Hajjar (Rock Palace) which used to be the last imam of Yemen's palace. It is now a museum, but it is far more impressive from the outside. This is one of Yemen's most famous monuments, and is found in most books about Yemen, and on postcards and stamps. If you can only visit one place outside Sana'a, Wadi Dhahr should be it.

by maykal

Ta'izz...the former capital of Yemen during the Imamate...is a strange city. It is built underneath Jebel Sabir, and the layout is very confusing, as there are many hills and bridges over streams...I spent most of my time in ta'izz completely lost. It isn't any where near as beautiful as Sana'a, but the older quarters (on the mountain slopes) are worth visiting, if you can find your way there. In the new city is the Imam's former palace, which is now a museum...this is a definite must-see, as you can see what a luxurious life the Imam must have had when his subjects lived in poverty. The place is crammed full of the most advanced items of the 1950's, which include some very odd and unexpected things. The pictures as you enter are also worth seeing, but are not for the squeamish...many are of public executions - before, during and after.

Aden is very different to...

by maykal

Aden is very different to Sana'a. It is located on the Red Sea coast, on a volcanic peninsula, and is really a collection of settlements, rather than one big city. Crater is the oldest part of town, and also the main part, and contains the famous water tanks of Aden, as well as the only Pizza Hut in Yemen! Sira Island used to be off-limits to visitors as it was a military area, but now the military have moved out, and tourists are free to climb to the Turkish castle from where there is a great view of Aden. At-Tawahi is the former British duty-free port, and several colonial buildings remain (although the one and only church in Yemen has since been bombed). The best beaches are nearby at Gold Mohur Bay where there is a posh beach club, and round the headland is an un-named wild beach with a shipwrecked Russian tanker. Before unification, the women of Aden were treated fairly equally, but...

Visit to WADI DUAN, the village in Wadi Hadahramawt valley. You get surprised by it's eccentric form, it looks like many big brown coloured box jointed each other. Walking the narrow complicated streets, you feel to be in the labylinth made of clay. Sometimes women wearing a local hat with a pointed crown passes by slowly.

Visit Marib, where there are (at least) two special things to see. The first are the remains of a temple, dating back to the days af the queen of Sheba (see the green text below and the last picture in this item). The other one is the great dam that provided irrigation water to vast areas of agricultural land. The dam has collapsed hundreds of years ago and the land turned back to be a part of the Arabian desert. The only remains are the giant locks or sluices that directed the water to the different locations. The picture below shows the South sluiceMakeda, The Queen of Sheba. The meeting of King Solomon of Israel and the Queen of Sheba had significant repercussions upon the fate of Israel and the matriarchy of Sheba (believed to be early Ethiopia), and has inspired writers, artists and readers for centuries. This text will compare several versions of the Solomon and Sheba story,...

Visit the city of Shibam.

by schielen

Shibam is called the Manhattan of the desert. The picture gives you an idea why. It has about 7,000 inhabitants, and was capital for periods of the Hadramawt kingdom. Hadramawt owes its fame to its distinct architecture, which now is on UNESCOs programme to safeguard the human cultural heritage. The houses of Shibam are all made out of mud bricks, but still there are about 500 tower houses, rising 5 to 9 storeys high. While Shibam has existed for around 2,000 years, most of the city's houses come mainly from the 16th century. However over the following centuries, many have been rebuilt over and over again.
