Marib

by worldtraveler55

MaribMarib is Yemens most ancient city. The former capital of the powerful Sabaean empire, it makes up part of the largest archaeological site in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula and has been called the regio's "cradle of civilisation".Caravans would stop here after crossing the Wadi Hadramawt from the port of Qana on the Arabian sea, and the city soon came to control the acient incense routes.Inscriptions indicate that the city dates from at least the 8th century BC, though it may have been founded even earlier.See also my special item Queen of Sheba for more information.

Marib (Arsh Bilqis)

by worldtraveler55

Arsh BilqisThe ancient Arsh Bilqis (Bilqis Palace/Bilqis Throne/Temple of the Moon) is the site of the famous five-and-a half- collumns often seen in tourist brochure.Although linked to the legend of the queen of Sheba, archaeologists now believe that the temple predates the queen and is actually around 4.000 years old. It is thought to have been built arround 2.000 BC, and to have been dedicated to the moon. The temple consists of a square with an open courtyard, at the centre of wich lies the old sacred well. Twelf steps lead from the open area to the hall, and there's a row of fixed marble seats on the western side and a plinth on wich a 6m statue of the Sabaen holy Oxen once stood. The Australian traveller and scholar Edward Glaser was the first to record and read a short Middle Sabaic inscription engraved on one of its pillars, mentioning the god Almaqah of Barlan. Almaqah was the...

see El Ghammariya work

by yurxlnc

The lunar shaped [ from Ar gamar = moon] decorated glass above doorways is one of the features that made Sanaa a World Heritage site. The coloured glass set in gypsum moulds allows light to enter the buildings. They are bought ready made as most doorways are made to a fairly standard design and size.As a side line other plaster work is also made.

Hodeida port

by starstudio

Visit Red Sea port of Hodeida. There is little here of historical interest apart from the fish market, where fishing boats have been built from wood in the same way for hundreds of years. More than the colourful boats, is a realy big variety of size and kinds of fishes. Sharks you can touch, is not your everymorning handshake. Or it is?A very loud place, but the people there feel familiar to tourist. For my opinion, a suggestion for a morning visit as must.

Wadi Dhar (chanel of good luck)

by starstudio

time & gravityDeep in a fertile valley this palace was built on a prominent rock, it became one of the symbols of the Yemen. Built like summer quarters for the imam Yahya in the 1930s, the palace counts five stages. This palace currently shelters a museum, whose the only jewel is the building itself.

Nuts out the wall of the Old Great MosqueFrom ancient years, a big part of traders depended for their wealth on the spice trade. Aromatics such as myrrh and frankincense were greatly prized in the ancient civilised world and were used as part of various rituals in many cultures, including Egyptian, Greek and Roman.

Qat

by JohnniOmani

Qat plagues Yemen, clear and simple. Is this tip a danger? general tip? It is hard to say. Books can and should be written about this stimulant. Life for most Yemeni men revolves around the stimulant qat, whose leaves come from a shrub cultivated in the highlands. Chewing qat is an important social activity, but also a serious economic, health and social problem. Most men in Yemen spent a third of their earnings on this stuff and the practice of relaxing with qat eats away the most productive times of the day. It is so profitable that qat is sometimes grown and or supplied by criminal gangs, and up to 65% of the land is used to grow it. Travellers are often asked to join in and the decision lies with you. Do you enjoy the social setting or contribute to the social problem that plagues Yemen? The Qat issue is one that the Yemenis will have to tackle in they want to move towards a more...

The Jol

by MichaelFalk1969

The Jol is a desert plateau dividing the Wadi Duan (Dauan) and the port of Mukalla. From the viewpoints on the rim of the plateau you can have fabulous views on the Wadi Duan, its villages and palm groves. Apart from that, the Jol is a barren desert with nothing but stones and the occasional camel.
