Manackha/Hajjara

by MichaelFalk1969

The mountain region (Jebel Haraz) around these two villages roughly 3 hours southwest from Sanaa is spectacular and best experienced by hiking. The villages itself, though, are pretty dirty even for Yemeni standards and in my opinion nothing spectacular. If you see them from a mountain top though, they look very spectacular, clinging to the mountains like eagle nests. The area around Manackha/Hajjara is cultivated and very green for Yemeni standards. The terrace fields almost remind of Bali.I recommend a two day trip from Sanaa with one overnight stay in Hajjara. The reason is that you will probably arrive past midday if you`re coming from Sanaa, and due to the elevated location of both villages, it often gets foggy and cloudy in the afternoon. Hiking is then out of the question. In the mornings though the weather is usually clear. So even if you`re unlucky and you can`t see a thing on...

TAKE HOME A JAMBIYA !

by DAO

If you visit Yemen, you MUST take home a Jambiya or 2. The Jambiya is worn by virtually every man in Yemen. They are everywhere! If you do buy and take home one or 2, do not forget the belt. They are often very ornate and hand woven. The absolutely huge versions worn by men on the street are razor sharp and are proper weapons. The price would not be cheap and the airlines might have something to say about it being in your luggage. Smaller versions (pictures) are more decorative than functional, but only cost about $5 if that. So take a bit of Yemeni culture home with you!Remember it has to go into your checked luggage!

Wadi Duan (Dauan)

by MichaelFalk1969

I recommend to plan your Hadramaut excursion so that your final two days are reserved for the Wadi Duan. It is full of typical Hadrami villages, whitewashed merchants houses, cream-coloured mud-brick architecture, majestic canyons, oasises and palm groves. The villages of Hajjarain and Sif are especially recommended for a stopover and walk through the town. From the Wadi Duan, you can reach the port of Mukalla (from the airport you can catch the return flight to Sanaa).

Bab Al Yemen

by MichaelFalk1969

The historic town gate of Sanaa. You can stand on the ramparts with a good view on the chaotic traffic, some nice buildings and the market stalls of the Suk (go through the small gallery inside and then upstairs). It is also a good waypoint for orientation: if you remember the way from your accomodation to the Bab Al Yemen, you cannot get lost. Everybody can point you to the Bab Al Yemen.

Sanaa: stained-glass-windows

by MichaelFalk1969

Very typical for the Old Town are the wonderful stained-glass windows. You find them anywhere in Sanaa. They are especially beautiful at night and mostly part in the cozy living rooms (so-called "mafradsch"). Their small replicas are nice souvenirs.

Wali Graves - Sayun

by MichaelFalk1969

The graveyard in Sayun features some beautiful conical grave monuments, the so-called Wali Graves. Walis were highly respected men who served as mediators or judges in local quarrels. The graveyard should not be entered by non muslims.

Al Hudaib

This little village near Hajjara is an Ismailite community; the most impressive sight is a whitewashed monument on a mountain pillar with incredible views over the Jebel Haraz. Should not be missed when you visit the region.

Thulla

by MichaelFalk1969

A must-see: Thulla - roughly 1 1/2 hour west of Sanaa - is a pleasant historic Yemeni village built on a giant rock. The village itself is nice enough - if you have some energy to spend, you can climb on top of the rock to visit the remnants of a castle overlooking the village and the surrounding countryside. Spectacular views. The hawkers in Thulla are slightly more aggressive than in other places - just ignore them though, and they will finally give up.

Hadramaut

by MichaelFalk1969

Every Yemen-trip should include the Hadramaut with its spectacular architecture and landscapes. The Hadramaut, though in the midst of a sand desert, is no poor region for Yemeni standards. Traditionally, many Hadramis emigrated to India and Indonesia for trade or work; many grew rich, returned and built beautiful houses in their hometowns. You will surely notice the whitewashed palaces in many Hadrami villages, next to cream-coloured mud-brick-architecture. The highlights of the Hadramaut are- Sayun (with the Sultans palace)- Shibam (with its mud-brick skyscrapers)- Tarim (mosque; Al-Kaf city palaces)- Wadi Idin (palm groves and oasis)- Hajjarain- Sif- Wadi Duan - JolIt is easily possible to see these Hadramaut destinations in 4-5 days.

Al-Hajjarain

by MichaelFalk1969

Al Hajjarain is one of the most spectacular villages of the Hadramaut, located in the Wadi Duan (Dauan). The city has an extraordinary merchants house which looks totally out of place with its red colour and baroque design. A architectural specialty of Hajjarain are interconnecting walkways between houses allowing women to go from house to house without entering the street.
