Jeff and Leslie

by Simonneeddy

Break time at the Bermuda airport in 1943. Jeff the storekeeper manager and Leslie Musker a mechanic at that time later a Flight Engineer on Liberator B24 Bombers and other types of planes. HE was part of the crews who ferried these planes to Africa, India, Iran ( to be picked up by the Russians) See my Bahamas page for more details on these type of Ferry missions. The world is small. I had an inquiry about Leslie and it turned out to be his Granddaughter who had never seen him.She lives in Ottawa. Later I had another from a man who said he was his son. The great weather winter and summer. The rum was not bad either.

A GEM OF AN ISLAND

by Simonneeddy

TRAVEL ACROSS AND AROUND THE ISLANDIt is a beautiful gem of an island, especially from the air. Great place to sail in Hamilton harbor and around Darrell's Island. I spent 18 months there 1943,1944. I was with the Royal Air Force Transport Command. Loved the place for its climate and beaches and at that time the rum . I remember loving to ride a bike around the island. Of course there were no private cars only military vehicles and Surreys with the fringe on top. I'm sure they still have these.I drove what was probably the first 3 wheeled motor bike across the island. All the children (and some adults) flocked around it as they had never seen anything like it. We also had a jeep ( Wing Commander Ware's vehicle) and a Truck to travel from Belmont Manor ( Headquarters) to Kindley field to receive and service the land based planes (that were being ferried to Preswick Scotland ,or Africa and...

Catalina PBY aircraft

In a BOAC CLIPPER 'SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL' passed through here a couple of times in a hurry He was to take the destroyer"Duke of York" to return to England but enjoyed his clipper trip so much he decided to fly straight through to England with his staff SAVING 6 DAYS TRAVEL TIME 'MR.W. AVERELL HARRIMAN' ( Special Envoy to Churchill and Stalin) who always passed through here was to be left behind because of bad weather in the Azores and only the mail was to be carried on the direct flight to Lisbon. It was vital that he be in England as soon as possible so he checked with the censors to find out how important the mail was. He was told that it was mostly chit chat between relatives and Friends. Nothing important. He immediately got in touch with the powers that be, who allowed him and another V.I.P. with him to displace some mail. As a result of this he reported to President Roosevelt that...

REMEMBER THIS BIT OF HISTORY...

by Simonneeddy

11th of March, 1941 ( U.S. was not at war) THE LEND-LEASE BILL became law in the U.S.A Permitting the U.S. to sell aircraft and other war materials to THE BRITISH The problem was how to get them across the ocean to the AlliesTo combat this problem R.A.F. crews started to Fly plane s to the British Isles. THE RAF FERRY COMMAND was formed to take over this task headquarters MONTREAL.IN BERMUDA The Pan American and British Overseas Airways Base. (Who officially loaned the base in Nov. 1940 to The Ministry Of Aircraft Production.--Squadron Leader G.J.' Taffy ' Powell who had managed this base for Imperial Airways before the war was sent from Gander NFL. to open what later became the Royal Air Force Ferry Command Base.) (At this time the ferry service was being run by CPR Air Service dept. as The Atlantic Ferry organization (AFTERO) The Picture is one of the PAN AM or BOAC Clippers .This was...

rock diving

by vrage

You are bound to see many small beaches (like just big enough for 2 or a few more)and any given point off the beaten path.My favorite is Tobacco Bay in St. Georges. It is actually quite large -but has refreshments and bathrooms. AMAZING rock sculptures protruding from the water are here (as well as all over)the water is usually so clear that if you stand near these rock formations you will see schools of beautiful marine fish swimming all around you. This is on the deeper end of the bay where my fiance'e was watching me show down the teenagers at rock jumping :)There are lots of neat places to do stuff like this.

Bermuda *Musts*

by Seabiscuit

When visiting Bermuda you absolutely must: Take a lot of patience and time with you, head toward Front Street, and hit the Cock & Feather Restaurant. (Locals used to call it the 'Prick and Tickle', and yes, I was one of them). Great Martoonies. Clearwater Beach (Site of the old US Military Base). Far enough away from St. David's to not instantly be reduced to bubbling rubber, and close enough to Harrington Sound to not be pithy.

Bermuda is not like most of the Carribean

by Jus_desireable

People might be like, "what a statement to make!?" But this is not an insult but to clear up some confusion. It amazes me that many people think Bermuda is like some places of the Carribbean, that are in a 3rd world state. Bermuda, fortunately for us, is a very modern day thriving community. Poverty here is not like poverty in most of the islands or in most countries. We are one of the richest GPA countries in the world, and you will tell that as soon as you look around.

Mingle, mingle, mingle

by Jus_desireable

Bermuda's strongest attribute has always been and still is,her people. Being trapped on an island that is only 22 sq. miles long, most of us are ready to hear bout other places, no matter how small you may seem it is. Plus, with the talk, you may be taken to do things that aren't on the tourist guide.Pics soon to come.
