Loping on Cliffs
  • Tip Rating:
  • We went on a trail ride over the mountain to the sea. Lovely vista toward the rock formations on the beach.
I do give you a serious warning here though.
My husband and I have our own horses and ran trail rides for years. I cannot in good conscience reccomend the outfit we rode with. The condition of the horse hoofs and general care while not deplorable were less than adequate.
Even more worrisome was the lack of skilled guides.
This led to an extremely dangerous situation for horse and rider. One tourist was so insistant on photographing from horse back he didn't realize the danger he was in. We tried to coach him gently at first. When he placed others and his horse in danger we acted when the guide did not. On a very steep rock slope he had no hands on the reins, turned in his saddle, his horse started to slip (not the horses fault) the horse fell into another rider.
We got him to jump off the horse, ponied the other horse out of the way and restored order to the trail ride. Amazingly the horses were not injured. Fortunately the mans camera was.
My husband and I took over as lead guide and rear guide to protect the inexperienced.

You must wear a helmet and closed toe shoes. This is not the time for sandels.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If you love golf bermuda will offer some great challenges....
There are quite a few courses on the island, although two of the hotels which had courses are not there any more,Castle Harbor and the Belmont.....although Belmont is still under a new name...
There are still plenty of courses foor you to enjoy...One thing about Bermuda golf, wind can play havock with you.One day playing at the belmont on a Par 3 180 so yards down hill, we hit wedges to the green with a little wind at our back, the next day it took 3-woods to get there..
The grass is different, ever hear of Bermuda Grass...Well.....
I was a little dissappointed in the condition of Port Royal when we were there in april, but the lay out of the course was great....

    Bring your clubs.... what else
    renting clubs costs about $30
green fees around $130 or so

The big sports in Bermuda are:

    a) Golf which I have no experience or expertise to report.

    b) Boating and fishing. I've always wanted to come to Bermuda on my own boat and explore the little islands and coves on my own. I am sure that you can rent or charter boats to do that - I just haven't done it. I'm sure there are fishing charters as well.

    c) Diving and snorkeling. Even though I desparately wanted to take one of the glass bottom boat tours to snorkel, the water was a bit too cold for that and the storm on Wednesday stirred things up so the visibility wouldn't have been good. The weather on the TV in the picture shows that the sea temperature is 72.2F or 22.3C. Anything less than 80 is too cold for my husband, and less than about 77 is too cold even for me to stay in for very long without some thermal protection

At the time I wasn't certified to do scuba and a resort course would have been about $100 IIRC. So I limited myself to an evening swim in the heated hotel pool.

Bermuda Blue Water Divers are the only ones that offer diving in the winter. They have a lot of packages including a water scooter specialty dive (for certified divers) for $180 including all equipment.

The diving in Bermuda is largely wreck diving. If you are doing it in the colder months, you will DEFINITELY need a wet suit.

    Cricket Matches
Actually, I have yet to watch this game, but the locals are rather fond of this sport.

I couldn't tell you this, due to my lack of knowledge on the sport. However, I'm sure you might be able to research this on the internet, right?

This was our first time snorkeling and we had a blast! It was easy to do and our guides on the catamaran Restless Native were informative and FUN! Try feeding cheese to the fish (hope they're not lactose intolerant). Afterwards there were Rum Punches and Oatmeal Cookies - the best! Everything was a !!

All equip provided on the Restless Native

Believe it! Bermuda Bonefish on Fly!
Captain James at the helm - Bermuda

Flyfishing for bonefish in Bermuda was unheard of just a few years ago. But now, a seasoned native sports fisherman, James Pearman, is guiding trips on the flats of Bermuda. Being out on the gorgeous water of Bermuda is a special treat in itself, but to be guided by this experienced professional (who also loves to laugh) is a real thrill. During certain months, you and your special fishing buddy can have a romantic evening BBQ fishing trip aboard.

James provides all tackle and flies. You should wear polarized sunglasses so you can see the bonefish through the surface of the water. Wear a hat and sun protective clothing. Boating shoes also beneficial.
