    Go Swimming in Winter?!

Why Not?! Well, if you're a tourist, you will, but if you're a local you won't. The locals think it's too cold... Not for me! To me, 70 F is warm enough, and it makes a great memory to swim on New Year's Day! The beaches are so beautiful and clean, and the water is so blue... How can you stay away?!

Horseshoe Bay is the most famous beach on the South Shore with pink sand, clear water, and a beach house: 441-238-2651. Chaplin Bay and Warwick Long Bay are just east of Horseshoe Bay with a more quiet atmosphere. Continue on the South Shore to Astwood Cove and then Elbow Beach next to the Elbow Beach Hotel: 441-236-3535. Farther on the South Shore you'll find John Smith's Bay. Find your favorite, I love them all!

BEACHES Chaplin Bay and Stonehole Bay

Between Horshoe Beach and Warwick Long Bay lie two equally enchanting beaches. I should add that all of these beaches are linked together by footpaths along South Shorte Park, the length of which is probably about 1.5 kilometers. Because you have to walk a little further and the beaches are not quite as extensive, there are fewer peo;le here, and you can frequently get a cove to yourself. The bit of privacy lets girls take their tops off, though I doubt they are quite allowed to do so. One other ujniqe thing I found here was that there are shady hollows worn into the rock formations. They can provide a bit of relief from the sun, and a bit of shelter to place your things while you swim. On a cautionary note, I would say that the dropoffs from the beach are a bit nearer and more severe here, as are the waves. Also, there are no lifeguards on any beach except Horsehoe. Still, because they offer less amenities and are almost free of people, I preferred them.

    BEACHES Jobson's Cove

Adjacent to (and accessible from) Warwick Long Bay is the small picturesque beach called Jobson's Cove. Secluded by rock formations and with barely a channel to the ocean, the site is frequently chosen for weddings. Despite the fact that the cove is one of the most beautiful attractions on the island, on none of our three visits did we find it crowded. I highly recommend at least a pause throough Jobson's Cove if you are in the area.

    BEACHES Warwick Long Bay

The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw Warwick Long Bay was the Great Ocean Road in Australia. The shoreline was that beautiful, but oddly, not crowded. Apparently the cruise ships and major hotels empty out into Horshoe Bay. With a very very long stretch of beach, we found about half the beachgoers to be locals, very open to casual conversation and easy to talk to. There is a small parking area, but nothing in the way of concession stands. on the bluffs overlooking the beach is a large playground for kids and some walking trails that link different sections of the beach. Next door Jobson's Cove is where a lot of people choose ot have weddings.

    GO TO THE BEACHES!

by VeronicaG Updated Dec 20, 2006

The beaches we traveled to in Bermuda were striking in their beauty! I included views of two beaches: Horseshoe Bay and the beach by St. Catherine's Fort. They were fantastic examples of the pristine beaches on two different parts of the island.

Horseshoe Beach was located at the Hamilton side of Bermuda. It had a beach house where snacks and beverages could be purchased, as well as sand chairs, lounges and umbrellas. There were also changing rooms. We were told to beware of rip tides that occasionally appeared in this area. The address is South Shore Park, 94 South Road and phone number is 441-238-2651.

The beach at St. Catherine's Fort was at the St. George's side of Bermuda. This was our favorite beach because it was the prettiest! We retrieved LOTS of beach glass from the water in colors of cream, orange, purple, amber, brown and green. There were restrooms and a small snack area. We could see St. Catherine's Fort looming over us as we swam below. I want to return to this beach again someday!

With 1 km of uninterrupted pink sand it’s the most easterly of the beaches of South Shore Park and the longest in Bermuda.

Although open and exposed to southerly winds, the waves are generally moderate due to the nearby reef. The many broilers found at the reef are an interesting feature. Warwick Long Bay is less busy than many other beaches and is popular with the dog-walking, jogging and walking fraternities.

This is a very beautiful straight beach. Lots of PINK SAND here! You can actually walk all the way from Warwick Long Bay to Horseshoe Bay, and pass by many other lovely coves including Jobson's Cove - a favourite for marriages on the beach !
