Beaches for sunsets...

by airkarat

Bermuda's north shore is generally rocky, yet it makes for the best sunset views. We found a beach near the Eastern tip of the island called Tobacco Bay.Look for rock fish at dusk, swimming in the shallows...Scott's notes:This is a small bay with a nice sandy beach located on the North Shore just down the hill from fort St. Catherine. There is a beach club house with washrooms and a food vendor.** Please correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember the washrooms/change rooms being on a beach in Southampton parish, not this one **

Fort St. Catherine is just one of many forts preserved for our enjoyment. It had Victorian-era cannons and dizzying drops into the sea.Scott was in his glory. His notes: The fort is located up a huge hill on the NOrth shore up from the town of St. George. The fort was completed in 1614 and extensive rebuilding and remodeling continued until the 19th century. The museum has dioramas covering the island's history.

Open on Sundays!

by airkarat

Gift shops are open on Sunday, one of very few places that are open. Bermuda rum cake may be purchased here with free samples. This fort is designed on the fort built in Gibraltar and was built in 1809. It has never been fired upon. The Bermuda Maritime Museum is housed in the Keep of the Royal Navy's HM Dockyard.Queen's Exhibition Hall: This was built as a magazine and once stored 4,860 kegs of gunpowder. Exhibitions in this building: Navigation, Whaling, Pilots & Customs, Bermuda Sloops, Ship Models, Guns & Ramparts, Cable and Wireless, Flying Boats, Bermuda Transportation Co., Cruise ShipsThe Shifting House: This was so named as it stored ordnance being shifted to and from naval vessels. On exhibition here is historic diving equipment, and artefacts recovered from 17th century wreecks.Bermuda Monetary Authority: Ship's Pennies and Years of Change, showing Bermuda's history in coins and...

South Shore Coves in February

by airkarat

This was my second visit to Bermuda in late February - this time we lucked out with the weather with it eaching into the high 70's (F) and being sunny most of the time. The beaches are full with families picnicing, playing volleyball, walking, etc. but it is a bit too cold for swimming. In 1998 Bermuda was running a travel special for February - if the daytime high temperature did not reach 70 degrees, participating restaurants and attractions would provide deep discounts. During that visit, we reached 70 degrees each day, but it was rainy and windy.By 2003, that deal was gone, but during the month of February, companion air fares were free.

Not really broken, just never finished.

by airkarat

Outside St. George is what appears to be a church ruin. In fact, the church was never finished. From Scott's notes:The capital of the island used to be St. George. Where the ship the Sea Venture was shipwrecked in 1609. This church was under construction in 1874 but the church was in disagreement so construction stopped. Then they moved the capital to the middle of the island to Hamilton. Many people left and the church remains unfinished to this day as a historical landmark.

Views of the islands in every direction

by airkarat

Gibbs Hill lighthouse with its 185 steps to the top was closed for repairs when we were there in February 2003. We were using our bus pass on this trip, and walking to reach the base of this cast-iron lighthouse, we were already winded, as it is located at the highest part of the island. However we found the drive was lined with loquat trees and we stuffed our pockets with these apricot-like fruits.

Walk the North Shore

by airkarat

The sandy beaches and fancy hotels are found mainly on the south side of the islands, but the best sunset views are had from the north shore. An easy walking trail has been made on the level disused railway bed.

Check out the Crystal & Fantasy Caverns

by TheTravelSlut

The Crystal Caves are comprised of two separate pre-historic caverns with underground pools of water from the ocean via an underground network of passageways. The Crystal Cave is observed by walking on floating pontoons over a 55 foot deep underground lake while the adjacent (but not connected) Fantasy Caves are observed from a winding concrete walkway. The caverns were discovered by two young boys in 1905 and include hundreds of limestone formations from walls, floors and ceilings and the pools of seawater are crystal clear. The interior cool temperatures are a nice break from the heat outside the caves. There are guided-only tours, and the narration about the caves' history and formations is quite interesting. A special treat is when the guide turns off all the lights and you can "feel" the darkness.NOTE: Both caves require walking up and down dozens (80 or so) , steep, concrete stairs...

Elbow Beach. The pop singer...

by Weener

Elbow Beach. The pop singer 'Louise' named her last album after this beach, its no wonder why. The sand on the beach is pink, made up of tiny grains of pink coral. The beach stretches almost a mile. The sea is very calm due to the protective coral reefs that surround it.
