The Royal Naval Dockyard was...

by AndreasK

The Royal Naval Dockyard was built in 1809 by the British Naval Fleet. Twenty years ago it has been restored and developed as a commercial site with the Maritime Museum, Bermuda Arts Center, and Craft Market. Ferries run between Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard.

At the far eastern end of the chain of islands is the 17th-century town of St. George. The town's narrow lanes and historic landmarks appear much as they did more than three centuries ago. St George has many excellent pubs, restaurants and shops (this picture and the one below were taken by Robin Hill).

The South Shore has many beautiful beaches: Jobson's Cove is a beautiful little enclosed cove on in Warwick Parish; Warwick Long Bay is just to the East and Stonehole and Horseshoe Bay are to the West. Bermuda owns the world's northernmost coral reefs. Needless to say that I spent most of my time in the water swimming and snorkling.

Going to the Beaches. There so countless beaches aound only 22 sq miles big Bermuda.Bermuda's beaches are mostly pink. Beach sand is not volcanic but from finely pulverized remains of calcium carbonate shells and skeletons of invertebrates such as corals, clams, forams and other shells. Pink sand and the crystal clear, turquoise-colored water go well together. YOu can easily get perfect postcard-like pictures!

Seeing the Bermuda Historical Society. A very neat, old building in Bermuda. Interesting history to learn about a very small island. The US has a very high military presence on the island. This is evident when you land as you see the military aircrafts. You learn about the British influence of the island

GLASSBLOWING : I wanted to visit a glassblowing factory because it is one of their specialty. It is possible to find a few on the island, but any of them were giving representation at the time. Then again, very expensive. I bought a little frog (½ inch). Frog seem to be very important in Bermuda. They say that after the rain, you can hear them sing. Even if it rained on the Tuesday and even more on the Friday night and Saturday, I didn’t hear nothing. Was it a joke of Mother Nature, since it was winter?

by Chrystalain

CRYSTAL AND FANTASY CAVES : We also visited one cave from the Crystal Caves, named Fantasy Cave, because Crystal Cave was in renovation. The difference between these caves is not their composition : they are the same. However, one is untouched by man (Fantasy). It means that only what falls naturally is taken out. As a result, the stalactites are bigger and spectacular. It was beautiful! Unfortunately, I though, since the name of the principal cave is Crystal Cave, to see crystal, but we were explained that the name is not from the content of the caves, but because of the color of the interior lake. There was also an interior lake in Fantasy Cave.

BEACHES, BEACHES, BEACHES ......

by Chrystalain

BEACHES, BEACHES, BEACHES ... This is the nicest sand I have seen in my life (St-Marteen is great, but Bermuda is better!)!!! This beach is near Fairmount Southampton Princess...for more, see my travelogue...The different landscape of Bermuda are magnificient! Very beautiful beach (clean) with a very fine pink sand. Unfortunately, we didn’t have our digital camera, but still, the pictures a good. We did brought back a few rocks, some shells and of course, some sand to make very nice souvenirs. Imagine! You can buy little bottle with rocks, shell and sand, but you have to pay 8$US. So we did it ourselves.

PERFUMERY GARDEN : We visited a perfume factory. The visit was rather short (just a few minutes) and the products were incredibly expensive. Imagine! 8$US for a soap and 19$US for a bottle of 250 ml of bubble bath!Interesting and if you buy nothing, it cost nothing!!! ;o)
