Renting motorbikes in Bermuda

  • I couldn't write a page on Bermuda without passing along a warning. We were told that it is not real safe to rent motorbikes in Bermuda because of the traffic. Don't take your life lightly on this busy island! If you must, don't allow young teens to do so.

Well I know Vters all to well -- yup you are going to rent that nice new motor scooter and drive around the Island only problem is you have not driven one in 27 years since college. Well if you brake your right leg you have a great place to go for care the Hospital in Bermuda King Edward the VIIth is top notch.

Local weather on the hotel TV

Bermuda is off the shore of North Carolina. It is not in the tropics. It is in the Gulf Stream, which keeps it warmer than the coastal US. They do have palms and coral, although only about half of the coral types grow around Bermuda as grow in the Caribbean.

So don't expect to come in February to someplace with warm water and hot sun. They do not ever have frost snow or ice, but the record low temperature is 43 deg. F.

If you don't absolutely have to swim, Bermuda is quite pleasant in the shoulder season (spring and fall) and the prices are a bit less.

I took a picture of the weather report on the TV in our hotel room. It says:

"Climatological Data for Friday 24 November 1995
    24-HR PCPN: 0.20 INS
    Monthly PCPN: 4.53 INS
    AVG. MOV PCPN: 4.1 INS
    YTD PCPN: 51.49 INS
    Normal YTD: 49.52 INS
    HI/LO TEMP: 72.0 65.6
    Normal HI/LO: 72.8/65.6
    Record HI/LO: 78 - 1975/58 - 1972"

So that give you an idea. 72 deg F is plenty warm for me if I'm going to be walking. It did rain on Wednesday when we were out of the Dockyard.

    Be polite!

  • If you feel that you've started out on the wrong foot with someone in Bermuda, it may be that you forgot to start the conversation with a polite 'Good morning' ;)

We were detained and our luggage searched upon arrival, and after finally clearing Customs, we were tired and hungry and a bit embarrassed for having been singled out into a glass room where all the responsible-looking tourists could gawk at us.

I rushed up to buy a bus pass and started talking destinations and options. The attendant stopped me short with a wagging finger and said, 'Good AFTERNOON! I'm interested in obtaining a bus pass'...

Again... SLOW DOWN ;) take your time, or risk being perceived as inconsiderate and demanding.

Of the 3 large department stores, two (Trimminghams and Smiths) are closing or have closed, and Coopers (the third one) is downscaling their retail operation.

Cooper's is tearing down their old building for a new, larger building which will be primarily an office building with a much smaller Cooper's retail store on the ground floor. This past winter, Bluck's closed its last satellite store and will concentrate its entire retail from it's Pitt's Bay Rd. location.

With the closing of Trimingham's/Smith's, the reduction in retail operation by Cooper's, perhaps as much as 50% (or more) of Bermuda's retail outlets will cease to exist. This includes all of their branch stores in St. George's, Dockyards, major hotels. Cooper's does have an online store, but this doesn't help with shopping if you are in Bermuda.

    Opposite sides of the road!!

  • Many people who go to Bermuda rent scooters so they can go everywhere on the Island, but sooo many people get hurt from them! There were probably at least 3-4 people who had gotten into accidents on my ship and had to go to the hospital! Definetly not something you want happening on your vacation. One huge cause of this is that in Bermuda, they drive on the opposite side of the road and most tourists who go there arnt used to that. Another is all the buses, taxi's and cars go EXTREMEMLY fast on Bermuda's winding, curvy roads. They're used to it and your not, so I really wouldn't suggest ruining your vacation! Especially when your in Bermuda!

    Horseshoe Bay Beach
    by easterntrekker
Horseshoe Bay beach is so much fun but they are known to have dangerous riptides. Swimmers beware, as the waters can be on the rough side and the undercurrent stronger than what you may think. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer; however, the swim season can be longer. Use prudent judgment at all times and always swims with another person.

  • Beware! - Bermuda
    Beware!
    by peterd1331
With no rental car service available, visitors to Bermuda are often enticed by motorbikes. Road conditions are very good throughout the region, but outside larger towns and cities, visitors should watch for narrow roads that may not have much shoulder.

Drivers stay to the left-hand side of the road, making conditions more hazardous for vacationers from America and many other parts of the world. Use particular caution when driving at night.

Speed limits all over the island are low: 15 mph in the main city of Hamilton, 20 mph in the countryside. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is another concern and a good reason to observe speed limits and road signs. Vacationers who have rented mopeds or scooters should be aware that they are required to wear a helmet at all times.

Vacationers who opt to drive in Bermuda may be pleasantly surprised by the courtesy shown by native drivers. Taking a few minutes to observe local customs can be valuable and will help take the stress out of driving in an unfamiliar place.

    Tragedy

No doubt you have wondered about the Bermuda Triangle. It is the greatest
modern mystery of our supposedly well understood world: a region of the Atlantic

explanation. I began this as an innocent search before it escalated into
a vast project, a project to get almost every report possible, to track down every clue,
to verify every claim. . . and often to get the figurative door slammed in my face.
These official reports form the bulk of the evidence used herein. Carefully sifting
through these, with lines censored, pages cut out and paragraphs deleted, has brought to light a pattern interwoven with mystery and tragedy, as one disappearance illustrates.

Just more words of caution that the cars drive on the "other side" of the road from Canada or the US or Europe... when you cross the street.. look both ways and then check again! Use the cross walks.. the cars will stop for you if YOU too follow the rules of the road. Remember all those road safety lessons of years gone by... they make a lot of sense.
