Don't tour around during inclement weather!!

by Lady-Charisma

Okay, people. This may sound dumb, but don't knock it. You'd be surprised at some things people try to get away with. Here's one for ya. Try not to travel around the island when the weather's crazy and it's pouring outside. It's no fun and it's just not safe. The winds can get exceedingly strong and especially during hurricane season (no-brainer). Taxi-drivers may drive you around to make a living, yes. But aside from taxi service, also keep in mind, tourists can only rent MOPEDS. And honestly, would you try balancing an UMBRELLA over your helmet while you're riding that?? Didn't think so. Even if the passenger is kind enough to offer to hold it. So remember...check out the weather before you go out! I've included the weather website below.

WHAT SIDEWALKS??!!

by Lady-Charisma

Okay, listen up, people. Except for in town, SIDEWALKS basically DO NOT EXIST!!! It's crazy enough walking during the day, but people bravely (or insanely, depending on your take) walk around at night on the narrow roads with merely a reflective vest or shoes. Personally, I think it's insane (although necessary sometimes). Mind you, what looks like a SKINNY one-lane driveway that can hardly squeeze a car through is actually considered a 2-WAY STREET!! So by golly, if somebody is speeding your way, enter the nearest driveway. Forget playing king of the hill. It's just not worth the risk.

Drinking and driving

by Fezzie

Beware of walking along roads at night...many Bermudians are lax about drinking and driving and several tourists have been killed. In addition, though you may feel its ok to do the same, please don't. Take a cab, they're by all the bars. Be especially careful when driving your moped (if you do rent one)...

Restricted Shopping

by grandmaR

Of the 3 large department stores, two (Trimminghams and Smiths) are closing or have closed, and Coopers (the third one) is downscaling their retail operation.Cooper's is tearing down their old building for a new, larger building which will be primarily an office building with a much smaller Cooper's retail store on the ground floor. This past winter, Bluck's closed its last satellite store and will concentrate its entire retail from it's Pitt's Bay Rd. location. With the closing of Trimingham's/Smith's, the reduction in retail operation by Cooper's, perhaps as much as 50% (or more) of Bermuda's retail outlets will cease to exist. This includes all of their branch stores in St. George's, Dockyards, major hotels. Cooper's does have an online store, but this doesn't help with shopping if you are in Bermuda.

Portuguese Man-of-War

by davidmottershead

The Portuguese man-of-war is a jellyfish-like marine creature occasionally found in Bermuda. Its body consists of a gas-filled, balloon-like translucent blue float. Below the float are clusters of polyps from which hang tentacles that can reach about 150 feet in length. The sting from these tentacles is about 75% the toxicity of cobra venom. The Portuguese man-of-war is usually most prevalent in Bermuda’s waters in spring and early summer, especially after storms when they can also be seen blown onto the beach.

Opposite sides of the road!!

by crusin_tha_world42

Many people who go to Bermuda rent scooters so they can go everywhere on the Island, but sooo many people get hurt from them! There were probably at least 3-4 people who had gotten into accidents on my ship and had to go to the hospital! Definetly not something you want happening on your vacation. One huge cause of this is that in Bermuda, they drive on the opposite side of the road and most tourists who go there arnt used to that. Another is all the buses, taxi's and cars go EXTREMEMLY fast on Bermuda's winding, curvy roads. They're used to it and your not, so I really wouldn't suggest ruining your vacation! Especially when your in Bermuda!

Beware of the Portuguese Man O War

by Sunandlotsafun

The beaches are AMAZING in Bermuda but you do have to watch for the Portuguese Man O War - a blueish coloured jelly fish whose long blue tentacles can give off a very painful, powerful sting. Severe reactions can include difficulty with breathing and even cardiac arrest. Some signs that you may have been stung are: Stinging, burning, redness, swelling of the lymph nodes, and long welt lines. These jellyfish are easily seen floating above the water.

As tempting as it may be....don't speed!!!

by Sunandlotsafun

The speed limit around the island is only 50 km/hr. There are VERY hefty fines for even going 4 km/hr over that limit so be AWARE of this (although, you cannot rent a car on the island...only 50cc scooters...so your chances of even getting up to 50 km are pretty slim anyway - hehehehe)

Bermuda Hurricanes!

by cheryl_mcleod21

Major Hurricanes generally miss Bermuda because of its size but every so often a very serious one hits. You really don't want to be on the island and especially not in a beachfront hotel when one does hit. Hurricane Fabian hit this September and was a disaster for the island. Only 4 people were killed but tons of damage was done to many businesses, homes, trees and roads. My advice would be to pay attention to the weather, not just the daily forecasts but the long-term reports to avoid being stuck on the island during a Hurricane.

Not a Tropical Destination

by grandmaR

Bermuda is off the shore of North Carolina. It is not in the tropics. It is in the Gulf Stream, which keeps it warmer than the coastal US. They do have palms and coral, although only about half of the coral types grow around Bermuda as grow in the Caribbean. So don't expect to come in February to someplace with warm water and hot sun. They do not ever have frost snow or ice, but the record low temperature is 43 deg. F.If you don't absolutely have to swim, Bermuda is quite pleasant in the shoulder season (spring and fall) and the prices are a bit less.I took a picture of the weather report on the TV in our hotel room. It says:"Climatological Data for Friday 24 November 199524-HR PCPN: 0.20 INSMonthly PCPN: 4.53 INSAVG. MOV PCPN: 4.1 INSYTD PCPN: 51.49 INSNormal YTD: 49.52 INSHI/LO TEMP: 72.0 65.6Normal HI/LO: 72.8/65.6Record HI/LO: 78 - 1975/58 - 1972"So that give you an idea. 72 deg F is...
