Canada's hockey team winning Olympic gold
When the Canadian mens hockey team won the gold medal in 2002, there was a spontanious celebration in downtown Vancouver as the crowds poured out from the local sports bars and pubs. I'm sure this happened everywhere else in the country, but I happened to be witness to it in Vancouver. What was nice is that it was a warm and sunny afternoon in February... so it was an ideal day for this kind of win. Everyone came out to celebrate on the corner of Robson and Thurlow downtown and waved flags and wore hockey jerseys. There was an incredible feeling in the air and it felt somewhat surreal. People were breaking into spontanious hockey games in the streets and people were honking horns and cheering. This lasted well into the evening. The only other time something like this happened in Vancouver was when the Vancouver Canucks NHL team lost to the New York Rangers in 1994 during the Stanley Cup...
