    House on Stilts

You will notice throughout Iqaluit that all the houses are built on stilts. It is very common and I have provided a picture to explain.

All the building contractors are forced to used this method because of the permafrost.

Permanently frozen subsoil, occurring throughout the Polar Regions and locally in perennially frigid areas.

If a regular type foundation was used like you probably have seen in other places, it would just shift and crumble in this environment.

    Local Carver in Apex

If you are walking through some quiet streets and all of a sudden you hear these loud grinding noises it is most likely a local carver. The newer generation use power tools to do a lot of their carvers, where one time it was once done by hand.

It is a rare cultural experience to follow that noise and watch a carving actualy being made. These carver was making a pair of snow goggles.
