Indigo is the biggest bookstore in Charlottetown. Aside from books, you'll also find magazines and music. The staff is friendly and there are also computers to help you search for the books you want and allow you to order them if they are not available in the store.
What to buy:
Books - fiction, non-fiction, biography, history, classics, romance, children's, photography (including books of PEI and Charlottetown photos), performing arts, poetry, travel, sports, cooking, self-help, etc. You name it, they have it!
Magazines - the ones you'd see in any newsstand, plus a section with special-interest magazines you wouldn't normally find in a regular newsstand (such as religious, political, feminist, gay/lesbian, ethnic minority, etc).
Music - mostly pop, classical, and jazz.
Other things - journals, diaries, bookmarks, etc.
What to pay:
I usually buy from the reduced-price tables, and those are usually $5-$15. The books on the other tables and shelves mostly go from that price to around $50 or so.
There are lots of second-hand bookstores in town. The Bookman and The Book Emporium are on Queen Street, and the Reading Well is on Water Street.
So if you don't want to end up spending a fortune at Indigo or Bookmark, buy your reading material at these stores! The Bookman also has some antique books, but most are for display only and not for sale.
What to buy:
Pretty much any type of book imaginable, including locally written/published material.
What to pay:
Much cheaper than at regular bookstores.
There are two Christian bookstores in Charlottetown - St. Teresa's Parish Bookstore, which sells Roman Catholic items, and the Maritime Christian Bookstore, which is affiliated with a local Protestant Church. Both stores are locally owned, and quite small. The owners are friendly and love to chat with customers.
What to buy:
In both stores, you can find Bibles, books about religion, religious jewelry and pictures, etc. In the Parish bookstore they also sell rosaries, books about saints, and other Catholic things
