The confederation Bridge

by sim1

This is the Confederation Bridge one of the two ways to get to Prince Edward Island. The other way is by ferry (see transportation for more info). It is almost a tourist attraction this bridge, it is 12.9 kilometers long and dates from 1997. It joins Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island and Cape Jourimain, New-Brunswick. It is the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world. You can find more information on the website :www.confederationbridge.com

How to get here

by sim1

There are two ways to get to the island : The first one is taking the confederation bridge. When you come from New Brunswick and go to P.E.I. crossing the bridge is for free. On the way back to New Brunswick you have to pay toll. More information on the bridge and about the toll you can find on this website : www.confederationbridge.com The other way to go to P.E.I. is to take the ferry. The ferry is between Caribou, Nova Scotia to Wood Islands, P.E.I and goes 18 times daily in season.

the next destination....

by sim1

The day is over and it is time to end our walk together. I really enjoyed my stroll with you on the beach! And I hope you liked my little tour around the island as well. But now it is time for me to move on to my next destination..... so bye for now, but I do hope to see you again somewhere on my travels.

Fishing villages

by sim1

There are a lot of fishing villages as well on the island. And this is something you can see everywhere you go : lobster traps. Actually you see them everywhere when you are on the eastcoast of Canada. When you go to P.E.I. you must absolutely eat fish! I love fish, but no lobster though. So instead of lobster, I had some delicious salmon.

Just a mailbox :-)

by sim1

I just couldn't resist putting this picture of the mailbox on this page. I saw this mailbox on P.E.I., I have no clue where exactly, but I think this mailbox is so hilarious! If you like this funny mailboxes just as much as I do, you should take a look at my North America page. I have a travelogue filled with these funny mailboxes, you can see them on my North America page.

Typical Prince Edward Island

by sim1

Prince Edward Island is the island of the red soil and potatoes. Well, you can see both of that in this picture. I expected to see an island just full of potato fields, but that wasn't the case. Actually I only saw a couple of these potato fields, I found that very surprising.

Welcome to our island!

by sim1

Welcome to our island! This sign is the first thing you see when you go to Prince Edward Island. Because it has such a long name, a lot of people just call it PEI as well. PEI is an island, but also a seperate Province located in the eastern part of Canada. It must be the smallest province of Canada and has only 134,600 inhabitants. The island is famous for it's red soil and potatoes. It has beautiful hills and coastline, beaches, and of course the House of Anne of Green Gables. I think this is the number one tourist attraction of the island. This house is so famous because of a novel about Avonlea written by Lucy Maud Montgomery from PEI. I haven't been here though, so I can't tell you if it is worth a visit. But I have been touring around the island a bit. So on this travelpage I want to show you some images of the island, so you can have a look at it through my eyes.I wasn't planning...

Mosquito's!

by sim1

I don't think you are bothered too much on this island by mosquito's, except when you camp in the woods in Prince Edward Island National Park!!! I parked my car at my campsite, opened the doors and there they were..... waiting for me!!!You could hear them zooming... I think they were zooming cheerfully 'lunch! lunch! lunch!'... And I have the strong suspicion that they were refering to me!!! Hahaha. So I got out of the car, and ran for the insect repellant. That did help a bit, but I could still see those mosquito eyes staring at me..... and hear them think.... beware if that repellant wears off, then I consider you my dinner! Hahaha, so I took some drastic measures and went out for dinner myself, so they wouldn't eat me alive at the campsite :-)

Camping

by sim1

This is the camping in Prince Edward Island National Park. I expected to be fully booked, they indicate that you should make reservations in advance. But I didn't have any problems at all getting a spot, in fact it was quite empty! But I think to make sure you better make those reservations. But before you do I have to warn you for the mosquitos! (see my warnings and dangers). There are two types of places, in the wooded area, like I did, or an open site (some of them are right on the beach). There are lots of types of accomodations on this island, hotels, motels, bed and breakfast, whatever you would like. The whole island is focused on tourism so finding a place to stay the night shouldn't be a problem.

A walk on the beach on Prince Edward Island

by sim1

When I developed my pictures and looked at this one of me walking on the beach, it was like I was back in Prince Edward Island for a moment.....It was a chilly afternoon, there weren't a lot of people on the beach. The wind was blowing salty sea air into my face, and the sun was nice and warm. It had been a while since I had seen some sunshine, so walking on the beach in the sun was soooo relaxing. So why don't you join me on my walk? I can tell you a bit more about Prince Edward Island while we stroll together along the beach.....
