Balkan Restaurant Banff AB (Greek Food): Mortified and Disgusted!!!!
June 12, 2011
I (we) have enjoyed the Balkan Restaurant over the years, great food, awesome service and relaxing atmosphere UNTIL TODAY...never have I (we) been so so thoroughly disgusted and mortified by the behaviour of not only a patron with horrid language, loud and obnoxious voice but the waitstaffs (the two of you know who you are) encouragement of the behaviour and partaking in all the rudeness was above and beyond what any of the paying customers in this restaurant should have been subjected to! It was not our place to speak to this young lady at the next table to ask her to please refrain from talking (shouting) about her outbreak of syphilis and her Doctor's diagnosis, her using words like F*** and S***, W***** C*** etc. you get my drift , vivid discussions of her sexual experiences and dating practices.... and this was all at supper hour in this supposed "fine dining" restaurant. The waiter(s)/friends even gave her and her guest free drink(s)! The most painful supper I've(we've) ever suffered through in our lives and I'm no prude, poor people in the restaurant who were there just to enjoy their evening and the ones with children, I'm so sorry you all had to listen to this young woman, her dinnner companion and the waitstaff as they used the restaurant as a room that felt more like a frat house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not allowed to write the course language above, you fill in the blanks)

Balkan Restaurant.: Ridiculously good times
We've been visiting Banff for the last few years and have finally hooked up with this exceptional family. The food is good to above average if you order the normal souvlak or mousaka. The food is great if you order something different, like the roast lamb (arni) or rabbit (lagos). Don't be shy, explore a little here.
Balkan Restaurant.: Do not go there, an awful tourist trap, bad food
With regards to the BALKAN RESTAURANT, do NOT eat there!
I have no idea why this restaurant is open since 1982, I guess tourists keep it going. I am a fan of greek food and love my local greek restaurant (Evvia in Palo Alto,CA).
I ate in many greek restaurant and the Balkan in Banff is probably the worst.
We ate the "platter for two" which was $57, and had most of the restaurant so called signature dishes.
The souflaki was dry and soaked in lemon, the lamb-chops were a little less dry but still not good. The Mousaka was awful, you are far better than with a TV dinner, what was this chesse soufle that was about 75% the space of the mousaka, mousaka is about eggplans my friends.
The service was actually ok, so were the burgers and frieds we ordered for our kids from the kid menu. But trust me, this is not a greek place.
The Balkan: Don't Miss Bellydancing Night!
Greek Night at the Balkan= Bellydancing and plate smashing. Volunteer or you don't get to smash a plate! The host is loud and entertaining, the dancing and music is interesting, and the food is good! Make sure you make advance reservations for the dinner show nights.
Favorite Dish: Warm pita bread; anything with feta cheese and spinach
Balkan, The Greek Restaurant.: Great food, great service.
I had already read the good reviews for The Balkan and had it on my list of restaurants to possibly visit while in Banff, we were not disappointed. The menu is varied and has something for all tastes. Between us we sampled Prawns Ouzaki, Keftedes and the Baked Feta to start. Our waiter was more than happy to discuss the menu and answer our questions as we are not that familiar with Greek cuisine. Our mains consisted of Arni Psito ( Roasted Lamb ) Arni Kleftico and Lagos Stifado which is a Greek style rabbit stew. Everything was first class and nothing went to waste.
Our waiter was a friendly chap and was more than happy to stand and chat despite the fact that the restaurant had emptied out.
I believe that there is a Greek night on Tuesday and Thursday nights featuring live bellydancing, Greek dancing and plate smashing starting at 8:30pm. Might be best to make a reservation for this.
Lots of info on their website including photos, menus etc. etc.
Favorite Dish: Definitely worth visit.
Tricky Dicky rating 8.5 / 10.
Balkan Restaurant.: Tasty Greek Meals
We had been travelling for 4 weeks and eating all meals in restaurants and hotel dining rooms. We passed the Balkan during the day and were impressed by their statement " A Celebration of Greek Cuisine Fit for the Gods", deciding to return that night to sample the Greek food.
We chose the Greek Banquet for two, a sample of most Greek meals listed on the menu. The banquet came in two courses, the first being an extremely large platter of salad, greek bread and dips, this was very nice and sufficient for a main meal. Then followed the main platter containing, lamb, souvlaki, mousaka, rice, tomatoes etc etc. This platter was magnificent but far too much for us to eat, in fact we tried to finish everything and as such most likely did not enjoy the meal as much as we should have. The meal was finished with excellent coffee.
The bill came to Ca$ 64.50 which we thought was reasonable, so we left $80 as the service was very good. There is Greek dancing every Tuesday and Thursday evening.
Balkan Restaurant.: enjoyed the Greek night!
Three of us enjoyed dinner during their Greek night(Tuesday and Thursday) with music(not too loud) and dancing(not required) while feasting on great Greek homestyle cooking. More than the usual moussaka, skewers of meat, etc. - favorites found usually just in Greece such as kleftiko were offered. Great! And true to our experience in greece their Greek salad did NOT include lettuce!
Prices are average for a better restaurant in touristy upscale Banff; a decent wine list with Greek wines included; there was no cover charge for the music.
Favorite Dish: Kleftiko, a lamb stew with vegetables
Balkan Restaurant.: The Roast Lamb is to die for
We had an absolutely wonderful meal on the Tuesday night "Greek Night". Not only was the food superb, but the live bellydancing and plate smashing rounded out the evening nicely. Highly recommended if you are visiting Banff.
Favorite Dish: The "Arni Psito" or Roast Lamb. Fall off the bone tender and seasoned to perfection.
