Located about 45 mins walk from the center of Banff. Its a bit of a tough walk up the mountain but it makes the views worth the extra effort. If you're a lazy old sod then it is possible to get a Gondola lift to the top. I would recommed hiking up and then get the Gondola down. There are stunning views from the top of the mountain. If you decide on hiking up then I suggest that you bring a large bottle of water with you.

Mountains/Lakes / Falls: Random Falls
Make sure you wonder around the area, and also, if you are in a car and there are enough people, take side roads and just look around!!

I found this random spot but boy was it beautiful!!

I also have a mini video clip of this place...let me know if you want me to email it to you...

Price was $22.50 CAD for a round trip gondola ticket. The giftshop at the top has some good postcards and trinkets, but you can probably find the same things cheaper at the bottom of the mountain. :)

There are several companies in Banff which offer oragnised day trips to areas outside the town. If you are without transport (like we were!) These are excellent oppurtunities to get out intot he national park and see the sites safely.
We visited an ice canyon which was used by the first nations as a quick route between the mountins when it froze over in winter. We were decked out in Cleats and marched off up river.!!

Mountains/Lakes / Falls: Hike around Bow Falls
This seems to be where the beautiful aquamarine color of the water starts to be seen. We noticed it in the Bow River and at the falls. The hike to Bow Falls goes up the Bow River and winds back into Banff.

Walk slowly up the ice path to the hidden waterfalls encrusted in ice.

Better bring your spikes (clamp-ons), going uphill on ice is not so easy without them.

Mountains/Lakes / Falls: Walk or Hike the Hoodoos
Just out of town along Tunnel Mountain Road you will come to these unusual looking mountains overlooking the valley, river and forest. We went early evening hoping to sight some animals but had no luck, however we were rewarded with the magnificent scenery.

There are several paths and hiking tracks which lead to several excellent viewpoints overlooking the valley. For those who wish to hike it would be an excellent destination.

  • Directions: We drove out of town along Banff Ave towards Canmore and turned right into Tunnel Mountain Road, drive for 3 or 4 minutes and you will arrive at the campgrounds. The Hoodoos are opposite. Will take approx 10 minutes to travel by car.

    Mountains/Lakes / Falls: Lake Minnewanka
A great introduction to Banff, Lake Minnewanka provides some spectacular scenery to prepare you for the wonders of Banff.

A good place to come to to marvel at the mountains, have a picnic, see some horned sheep, and go out on the lake in a boat.

There are some interesting board by the shore explaining the history of Lake Minnewanka.

Only problem was the nearby building site, kinda spoiled the atmosphere.

  • Directions: Lake Minnewanka is best reached on the way to Banff from Canmore just after you pass the booths where you buy your Parks Pass. The lake is located about 40km from the main highway.
