one fine full moon

Sure, the town Banff has tons of places to grab a drink or something to eat but as pretty as it might be, it does not beat enjoying the nature you came all this way to see in the first place. I love visiting brewpubs as much as anyone but Banff would have to have a pretty damn good one to get me out of the park and into the town.

The campgrounds are beautiful and you can also hang out at one of the stunning lakes that are packed during the day but much less so in the evening. Well, lots of those same people are in Banff having a drink so why follow them there too! ;)

We caught this incredible full moon on our way to Banff National Park and it was not from a fancy revolving restaurant. It was out on the road.

Dress Code: Dress warmly in the evenings if outside. Even in summer, the temperatures dip considerably at this elevation.

St. James's Gate - Old Irish Bar: An Irish night out!

St. James's Gate, Banff

For the number of Scottish and Irish folks that supposedly inhabit Canada nowadays, we were astonished to find that St James's Gate in Banff was the only Scottish or Irish Bar we came across!

We weren't in Canada just to drink obviously, but for 2 countries that are so well known for liking there alcohol, we thought we would have passed more .... oh well!

St. James's Gate is a lovely little bar just off of Banff Avenue. It sells meals most of the day and has a large selection of beers on tap as well as the usual spirits and soft dirnks.

Typically, being Irish, it is a very friendly upbeat place. It is however not the cheapest of places! Infact, it is probably one of the most expensive bars we visited in our 2 week tour of Canada (a pint of Guiness will cost you around $7.50 - aroud £3.75, but then again it is imported!).

However, we kind of expected it to be expensive since Irish bars are so popular and its the only one for what must be hundreds of miles .... they can get away with it!

If you have a few extra dollars you should go. It is expensive, but it is fun! They have live music at night and the food is out of this world! It is a busy busy place on a Saturday evening!
