Took the C-Train to the Zoo(stops right outside) and spend the whole day there. It was -14 outside, but once you hit the animals indoors you will be peeling off your layers. Tons of different animals, definatly worth the trip Leave a Comment

Dinny the Dinosaur by Blatherwick The Calgary Zoo is my favorite thing to do in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was among the first in Canada and is currently home to more than 900 animals of over 260 different species. Established in 1929, it has since evolved into a modern and respected zoo committed to conservation and education and the facilities are considered to be world-class.The zoo features animal exhibits organized by geographic region in large, realistic, and natural enclosures. Unique to the zoo is its Prehistoric Park. This is an outdoor re-creation of southern Alberta as it might have appeared millions of years ago. The park features life-sized dinosaurs in their re-created geographical environment. The recently completed Destination Africa expansion was among the zoo's most ambitious expansions in its history. The complex of four buildings includes the TransAlta Rainforest and the African Savannah. The rainforest complex features an indoor forest and houses African mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and invertebrates. The zoo's Western Lowland Gorilla troop is housed here as well. The savannah building is home to the zoo's hippos and giraffes, along with many smaller animals. Both the rainforest and the savannah have outdoor areas, which are used when the weather is good. The zoo's pride of lions are housed in an outdoor enclusure adjacent to Destination Africa. Leave a Comment

Roar? by Unknownsu The zoo, on St. George's Island in the middle of Bow River, is one of Canada's five largest, with more than 1,400 animals in natural settings. The House of Night has nocturnal animals and the Canadian Wilds section replicates endangered Canadian ecosystems. Prehistoric Park, a re-created Mesozoic landscape, displays 22 life-size dinosaur replicas. Destination Africa showcases two African ecosystems, the TransAlta Rainforest and the African Savannah, and has mixed-species exhibits of more than 100 animals, the largest indoor hippo immersion habitat in North America, and 84 plant species indigenous to the African continent. The Calgary Zoo is the second largest zoo in Canada. The featured animal exhibits are organized by geographic region in large, realistic, and natural enclosures. These areas includes, Destination Africa, Canadian Wilds, Australia, Botanical gardens, Eurasia, Prehistoric park and South America. It is also known for its friendly staff and great customer service, and is open year-round except for Christmas Day. When a new baby is born in the zoo, the zoo has a contest to come up with a name for the new one. Most recently, On May 15, 2008, a baby gorilla was born. Zookeepers looked through more than 1,400 entries for the baby's name, and on July 2, she was given the name Yewande (Yu-wan-day), a Nigerian name that would be given to a girl after the death of an elder in the family. Her name was selected by Calgarian Justin Brouwer who won a prize package from the Zoo. Leave a Comment

The Calgary Zoo's unique Prehistoric Park is an outdoor re-creation of southern Alberta as it might have appeared millions of years ago when dinosaurs ruled the earth. The park features life-sized dinosaurs in their re-created geographical environment. This exhibit is quite rundown looking and will (unfortuneatly) be removed once construction starts for Antarctic Landing and Arctic Shores. Leave a Comment

Zoolights is a Christmas lights festival held annually at the Calgary Zoo. The event is usually held between the beginning of December 1 and ends the second week in January . It closes only on Christmas Day. The animal themed show consists of almost 3 million lights and is the largest seasonal light show in Western Canada. Scattered around the zoo are fire pits to keep warm. Vendors sell hot chocolate to drink around the fire. All exhibits are also open late so there is ample opporotunity to go inside and warm up Leave a Comment
