The zoo, on St. George's Island in the middle of Bow River, is one of Canada's five largest, with more than 1,400 animals in natural settings. The House of Night has nocturnal animals and the Canadian Wilds section replicates endangered Canadian ecosystems. Prehistoric Park, a re-created Mesozoic landscape, displays 22 life-size dinosaur replicas. Destination Africa showcases two African ecosystems, the TransAlta Rainforest and the African Savannah, and has mixed-species exhibits of more than 100 animals, the largest indoor hippo immersion habitat in North America, and 84 plant species indigenous to the African continent.

Really nice. I haven't seen many zoo's around the world but i've heard this one stacks up. IT has a large variety of animals. Things are always under construction there so there is always something new. There is a petting zoo, and a dinosaur park. It is $15-20 to get in but well worth it. Way to much to see in just one day.

This is a great zoo with the unique dinosaur park as part of the admission. There is a big Canadian wildlife section of the zoo which I missed due to time but its supposed to be great.
Be sure to check out the Eurasia animals, and the Australian/Nocturnal section of the park, with many unique animals you don't get to see to much in Canada! Seeing four elephants and the warthogs beside each other was a sight to see!
Downside is, as a Penguin lover there weren't any, and there are species which could adapt to this environment, but oh well! Still much to see for the animal lover.

I love our zoo; it is well designed and participates in many conservations efforts. The botanical gardens are a must. Our "Destination Africa" is only a year old, and is a well created exhibit. We have a Canadian wilderness exhibit if you care to check out some local beasties.
This will take up a good several hours, so you might want to bring food - I don't really care for the selection avaialble at the zoo. The dinosaur park seems to be a little worse for wear - more so in winter - I used to go nuts in there as a child!
If you do go, say hi to my friends Sally & Tunker. These are our white-handed gibbons, and I think they are gorgeous (having dabbled in primatology).

one of the many fun things to do in Calgary in the summer is to check out the Zoo. i went with my nieces to check out the new exhibits. two of them caught my eye. the first one is the Butterfly house. it's a little warm, but really cool butterflies, nonetheless.

In Calgary, I recommend our world-class zoo.
The zoo is laid out very well and is only getting better. They have a butterfly garden, a wonderful walk through cages to see bird such as owls up close without looking through mesh, and many other exhibits.

It is really fascinating to see the ZOO. We have one in Saskatoon, but it is not even a half of the size of the ZOO in Calgary.
