The Thirsty Turtle - Whyte Avenue: Hang out... drink inexpensively!

OK, so my friends and I found this one SUNDAY evening. WHAT A COOL PLACE!

(For those familiar with Edmonton, Whyte Ave - "The Thirsty Turtle" occupies what used to be "Syposium")

Sunday evenings one may enjoy the comedy stylings of local Edmonton talent! There were some HILARIOUS moments... and some not so! :P
Was nice evening anyway (starts at 10:00PM).

Friday evenings drink special is highballs on for $1.50! 7:00PM - 10:00PM. They have drink specials nightly.

If you plan on returning (and purchasing food), you may buy a Thirsty Turtle Wristband. Cost is $2. The total proceeds go to charity and next time you come in, your food purchases are 25% off.
    Pretty good deal!

I REALLY LIKE THIS PLACE. Both ends of the building are open. You may sit on the balcony overlooking Whyte, OR you may sit in the back balcony and enjoy a little more privacy.
    Comfortable and inexpensive!
    I recommend it!

Dress Code: Make sure that you wear clothes.

Blues on Whyte Pub: Blues and Bikes ...

Unasuming entry into a great place ....

This is actually more of a Saturday afternoon tip vs. a nightlife tip .... but I suspect that this joint is jumping whenever it is open! This blues club is on the ground floor of the Commercial Hotel and is filled with fun and history.

This club has a couple of rooms .. the first room off Whyte has the bar, pool tables, and a few tables for seating. The next room has the stage, dancefloor, and seating/tables. The decor was .... interesting, as were my fellow revelers ......

The real treat is the Saturday afternoon Blues jam! About every 20 mintues or so, a new goups of musicians/vocalists assume the stage and the party begins! The talent here is amazing, as is the energy ... another treat is the smoking area out back in the alley ....... filled with Harley's Galore as their owners/riders are also enjoying the music inside :)

    Fargo's: Fargo's

This is a large, modern, popular pub located on the lively Whyte Avenue. When I was there back in August it was completely packed full of people and they were open well after 2am. They were playing alternative rock and grunge... and it had a very positive, happy-go-lucky vibe. You could hang around the bar, sit in the booths, or mingle around the tables.

Note: Apparently Fargo's closed after I visited, and a new bar opened up instead a Canadiana Irish-type pub called "Hudson's".

Dress Code: The atmosphere is casual and they don't inforce any dress code.

    Whyte Avenue: Black Dog

    by backpacker_andi Written Aug 15, 2003 26 reviews

3 floors, including a big comfortable balcony. The music is good and all the people are nice.
Basement: you have couches and nice corner tables and a dimmed light. There is a bar, where you can get everything you want and movies are playing on a wall.
    Ground floor:
Nice tables and a big bar. Very comfortable to sit and enjoy a beer. There are also standing tables.
    Balcony:
You should come early enough to get a spot on the balcony. On hot days a perfect place to hang around and have some beers in the sun.

Dress Code: Go in whatever you want to!

Squires Pub: Hanging out at Squires

    by Rice_Paper Written May 2, 2003 127 reviews

Located on Whyte (below the Billiard Club building), this is one LOUD hangout. It's safe to say that you will find mostly university students here..."unwinding". The music played here are mostly Rock (a lot of the Tragically Hip; epitome of Canadian Rock).

So, if you're looking for a place to just hang with a glass of brew in one hand and bopping your head to some rock tunes, squires is the place to be. =)

    Dress Code: Casual

The city's original art house...it's a nice change from the usual state of the art/high cost commercial movie theaters. There are floor and balcony seatings available.

You can view what's playing (and the tix prices) at:

    Whyte Ave: Whyte Ave

This is the place to be when you want nightlife in Edmonton. Whyte Ave is the funky alternative-retro-hangout street full of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, cafes and more. The vibe on Whyte Ave is very positive and energetic, and the people there range from laid back hippies to mohawked punks. It seemed to me that Whyte Ave was as crowded during the day as it was during the night - definitely a nice touch adding to the energetic atmosphere.

Whyte Avenue / Old Strathcona: Whyte Avenue / Old Strathcona

by VTShounen Updated Sep 11, 2002 145 reviews

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Old Strathcona, as the area is called, is centred around 82 Ave, aka Whyte Avenue. This is the #1 pedestrian area in Edmonton, day and night. During the day, people come here for the cafes and the many unique stores that cater to the New Age vegan group. At night, this is the #1 spot in Edmonton for night life. You'll find almost anything you want, from pubs (O'Byrnes, Elephant & Castle, Sherlock Holmes) to lounges (Savoy, Devlin's) to mainstream bars (Black Dog, Fargo, Iron Horse, Squires) to country (Cook County) to dance clubs (Parliament, Roxy's) to pool halls (The Billiard Club) to comedy clubs (Varscona Theatre).

Though Old Strathcona stretches from 109 to 99 Street, the vast majority of the night life is from 105 St to 103 St.

Dress Code: Eclectic mix for bar hopping, and places usually aren't too picky. Be reasonable - a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip-flops wouldn't be appropriate. But Edmontonians tend to be bad dressers anyway.

The Ironhorse is a great place...

    by Rice_Paper Updated Sep 11, 2002 127 reviews

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Ironhorse is a great place to hang out on the weekends or any other days of the week. During the summer, you should definitely hang out at their patio. The staff are friendly.
The staff! The waitresses and bartenders are always helpful in providing recommendations for yummy drinks. My fave is the pornstar (shooter). Some of my friends say it's a girly drink but it's so yummy.

Dress Code: Casual wear is fine but if you wanna dress to impress, that's fine too.
