Fort McMurray Airport

The airport is about a 20 minute taxi ride South of the city centre. WestJet and Air Canada are the largest carriers that fly into Fort McMurray. Other carriers include Air Mikisew, Corporate Express, and McMurray Aviation.

Road side scene enroute to Fort McMurray

Many people drive to Fort McMurray from Edmonton. When leaving Edmonton there are a couple of route you can take in the beginning. One goes through St. Albert and Athabasca while another goes through more rural communties like Boyle and Grasslands.

From Edmonton it is roughtly 480 kilometers and between 4 and 5 hours of driving time. Mostly single lane driving with some passing areas.

Be careful if your trying to pass the larger transport trucks on these roads. I got stuck behind rows of them at times.

The scenary is not as dramatic as you will find in the Alberta mountains. Most of the landscape is flat with farms along the way.

In this picture is a typical scene enroute to Fort McMurray from Edmonton.

With the rapid development of the Oilsands, there's a lot of heavy truck traffic to and from Ft. Mac. day and night....and some of the loads are gigantic, taking up both lanes of the highway. These moves are very well supervised and have many pilot cars and trucks directing traffic, lifting power lines. Some of the biggest loads have been in the 500-850 ton range and take anywhere from 5-10 days to move from Edmonton to the final site. There have been as many as seven tractors combined pulling and pushing the huge loads. Most of the biggest loads are moved in winter when the roads are frozen solid.

Here's a link to some high resolution images in my pbase Gallery of the big rigs:

Here's a link to a video I shot of it as it moved through Two Hills, Alberta:
