~ Highway 63 ~
Highway 63 is one of the two highways you can take to get up to Fort MacMurray. It can be quite a dangerous route. With increasing traffic there is more potential for fatalities. This highway is currently only two lanes. Passing lanes are far and few between.
Trucks carrying massive equipment up to Fort McMurray generally take up both lanes. If you happen to be travelling to or from Fort McMurray while equipment is being moved you are looking at a long, very slow drive. Currently the only portion of the highway that has been twinned is the 41 km from the Confederation Bridge in Fort McMurray to the Syncrude site.

Beware of Foxes :-)
I don't think you need to panic if you see a fox but being from Labrador you always wonder about rabies. However in Fort McMurray they seem very friendly.
I spotted them around people at MacDonald Island and you can see in this picture they were not shy on the golf courses either.
I got some great close up shots of this fox as well. Cheers :-)
I have never felt unsafe in Fort McMurray but I did avoid lots of places. When I did go out in the nights you did get the feeling you should be careful.
A young Labrador man was murdered in Fort McMurray outside of a bar and that really makes you wake up. His murders bascially got away with the crime. Their punishment was very little.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is a 911 region with one detachment in Fort McMurray, and a community office in the neighbourhood of Thickwood. As well Janvier/Chard has a satellite office. There is also a detachment within Fort Chipewyan.
Fort McMurray’s RCMP detachment is one of the busiest in Alberta and fields more than 25,000 calls per year. The detachment is presently located in the back of the municipal building.
So don't let this tip stop you from visiting but be smart. You are not in a neccessarily safe rural environment. Fort McMurray is a booming town and with that comes some less than desirable traits.
