My theme for this trip was nature .... so of course, I wandered into another park with the assistance of my hostess!Saskatoon Island Provincial Park was established in 1973 and covers an area over 100 hectares. Many years ago, the Cree First Nations people picked saskatoon berries that grew on the small island and mixed them with other berries to...more

If you've never stood next to a buffalo, you must do that when visiting Grande Prairie. There are several ranches nearby that offer tours and such. To see the animal that once roamed free and wild, its sad to think of what our ancestors did to dimish their population, until you see one running right at you, then you count your blessings there is a...more

Most people go after work to eat, so you get all types. Dirty, clean, bikers, rednecks, gussied up folks, everyone. Its a very comfortable place to...more
I found Tim Horton's all over Alberta ... since I'd heard about this chain on VT, and had never been ..... I, of course, had to check it out for myself!! Today I tried a BLT and tea .... I love their bread ....... little loaves that are just yummy! And you can choose from their house blend of steeped tea, or from a selection of tea bags that...more

Canadians may find my surprise at finding full service gas stations..... an oddity. But in my area, full service gas stations are a thing of the past - and I haven't driven into one in over 20 years!!!
This young man humored me as I snapped his picture - he thought I was odd too!!
In addition to full service stations being the norm, the gas prices were quite steep during this visit ..... over $1 a litre, averaging about $50 or more a tank!!
Grande Prairie has two radio stations, one country, one everything but country. 97.7 SunFM is everything but country, except the backstreet boys, which they just won't play. They have contests, request hours (during lunch time), all sorts of fun things. My favorite time to listen to this radio station is first thing in the morning, because they are...more

They have lots of contests, and several request hours, including lunch time and then 9:00pm to 11:00pm. The Grande Prairie College, apart from being the post secondary school in town, is renowned for its architecture. It has no square corners, inside or out! Its crazy to walk inside, down long hallways you feel disorientated almost curving around. I remember in grade 6 opening my social textbook, written in the states, and seeing a picture of the...more
I have to say, I never, ever saw a law enforcement vehicle my entire journey through Alberta! For this urban American, I found that eirie ...... but pretty cool too!
I did find out one moderatly high tech means they do use to keep an eye on folks on the road ... these construction zone signs that clock your speed - some of them also have cameras that snap a picture of your car so they can send you a ticket later! So be cautious and watch your speed ... even when you think no one is looking :0
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Depending on the season in which you come to visit, be prepared for changing weather conditions. In Jan, we've changed from -40 to +5 in five days! Make sure when you are outside, you layer your clothes. The windchill up here is wild, so wear warm and windproof.
O'Brian Park is just outside of Grande Prairie, and is a great day use area. There is a park for kids, campfire areas, free wood to use, and outhouses. The park is alongside the Wapiti River. Most summers it is low enough to swim in, or take the dogs swimming in! You can also fish, or boat, in the river. As its only about 5 minutes outside of...more
The Grande Prairie Live Theatre is always holding plays, musicals, and concerts in town in two locations. These plays are all done by local talent, directed locally, the sets built locally, and all by volunteers. Its amazing what these people can do with a little wood and paint and a lot of imagination! I have been to three of the plays held in...more
I watched others kayak, canoe, backpack, and horseback ride ....... I did none of these things! But, with the assistance and insistence of my hostess, I did attempt rollerblading for the very first time!!!Okay, scarey for me, but not so bad that I'll never do it again :) Just grab some blades and head on over to the city park, or any bit of...more
