Check with the Parks Office in the village about any outstanding warnings.

As a general rule make sure to always stay on/near the marked trails. I know, taking that one magical photo could be the experience of a lifetime, sure, but im sure that wondering far off the trail and encountering a mama bear might prove rather more memorable. Don't discard food except in marked bins, the bear's sense of smell is very powerful

Park Service Warnings

Parks Canada will issue warnings and closures to trails and sections of the park (where necessary) in response to weather conditions, wildlife warnings and other issues.

You will want to stop by the Visitor Centre in Lake Louise where you can get the most recent updates and discuss alternatives if needed. Generally I found Parks Canada to be very responsive with any requests for information

At the same time, the guidelines they issue are just that,,,guidelines. For example, it is strongly discouraged to hike alone, particularly if you intend to try the more advanced trails. Obviously, nobody is going to stop you,,,,,so please let someone know where you are going to be and use your common sense.

Castle Mountain, 15 minutes from Lake Louise

Please, please heed the warnings on the highway near the Lake Louise area, and take care when you drive. Does it really matter if you're a little late?

Take note that it is 70 km per hour in the vicinity. This is due to the recent increase in human fatalities as well as many grizzly bear deaths.

There have been some horrific traffic accidents in the area and you can save lives if you just use some common sense and follow the speed limit.

it seems a lot further when you are walking it!

If you decide to do one of the hikes around lake louise in the winter just remember that the trail maps that you see posted by the lake are giving info for hiking in the summer, so only do the small hikes if you are fit, correctly dressed and accompanied by at least one person- what can be a gentle stroll in the summer can become a feat of endurance in the winter weather.Never underestimate the powers of the canadian winter weather, beautiful it most certainly is, but it can be also dangerous if you are not cautious about it.
AND DONT BELIEVE THOSE TRAIL MAPS THEY TELL LIES (only joking, certainly when it says one and a half miles to the end of the trail it certainly seems a lot further in the snow!
