World's Largest Lamp by canuckmike In the town of Donalda is the world's largest lamp standing tall at 42'. It lights up at night, you can enter the lamp and there is a free museum across the street. The backdrop for the lamp is really quite nice. Donaldo is located on highway 53 and secondary 850. Where no man has gone before... well not really. by canuckmike The small town of Vulcan has decided to cash in on it's obvious relation to Star Trek. It has a space station in which you can buy souvenirs (Vulcan ears are an obvious must) and an Enterprise statue. The town is located on highway 23 halfway between Calgary and Lethbridge, Alberta. Big easter egg by canuckmike In the town of Vegreville there is a giant pysanka (easter egg). It's located not far from the main drag in town. It is in a nice park and there is also a railway car to look at if you wish. Vegreville is located on highway 16 (Yellowhead) about a little more than an hour east of Edmonton. Leave a Comment

A Hot Dog Roast at Brazeau Lake by Bwana_Brown Sometimes it is interesting to get off the main roads and just explore some of the regular old back country. On our visit of late-April, 2001 we did just that, heading into the hinterlands about halfway between the Rocky Mountains and Edmonton. Brazeau Lake is the site of a hydro-electric dam and generating station, but it also has a nice little picnic area with tables and BBQ pits overlooking the lake. When we were there, the ice was not fully out of the lake but the waterfowl were already on the scene. Our picnic was quite simple, just some corn on the cob boiling away while we roasted some hot dogs over the open fire. A cooler of beer and wine helped us to wash the meal down. Highway 620 into the site, from Lodgepole (south of Drayton Valley) is very good as well. Leave a Comment

Churches by canuckmike In Edmonton there is a street in which Ripley's Believe or Not claimed it had the highest concentration of churches in the world. I've also heard other claims along the same line. Wether this is true or not there is still a lot of churches along this street and adjoining streets. None of the churches will take your breath away but if you are a church aficionado it would be worth while checking out. The street is 96 street and starts on 112 avenue and continues on southward. Meeting Creek Historic Station by canuckmike If by some chance you find yourself it the town of Meeting Creek there is a historic station and grain elevator. I thought it was quite interesting on how to get access to these places. When I arrived at the station the sign said that I needed to go to the community hall to get access. So I went there and all someone did was give a key to the place. So my friends and I got to wander around all by ourselves which I thought was quite nice. The grain elevator is nothing special but the station was quite nice, especially for such a small town. Meeting Creek is located on highway 56 about halfway between Camrose and Stettler. Walk to the top of Sulphur Mountain (2.285 m); it will take about 75 minutes. Enjoy the forest with lots of squirrels and the wonderful views over Banff, Bow River Valley and surrounding peaks. The track is signposted at the car park near the gondola station. When we reached the top, we really could say: "we made it to the top". We went down with the gondola and didn’t have to pay for this ride (a tip of our host of Odenthal B&B; see accommodation tip). Leave a Comment

by canuckmike Just Northwest of Stony Plain or 30 minutes west of Edmonton is the Alberta Fairytale Grounds. Basically you walk through a forest along a path to various stops where you sit down and watch classic fairytales happen in front of you. It costs $5 for adults, $3.50 for kids and free for under 2 years old. The hours are 10am to 6 pm daily from May to September. It's not the fanciest themepark but it is a nice break from the city. It is located roughly 2 miles north of highway 16 and 3 miles west of secondary highway 779. Leave a Comment Phone: (780) 963-8161
