Smoky Lake Travel Guide

I guess this could go under the category 'off the beaten path' since Smoky Lake itself is completely off the beaten path.

When we came to the Victorian Settlement, the young guy working the information booth was full of spunk, character and helpful information. He gave us a lot of historical back ground. We were one of four people to visit during the entire day.

The Victorian Settlement, made by the Hudson Bay Trading Co back in 1860's, was one of the largest and liveliest places in northern Alberta. It was strategically placed along the trading route of the Northern Saskatchewan River, serving also as the only river crossing ferry east of Edmonton. The settlement still has the oldest building in Alberta on original foundation.

But as the railroad developed, it started to decline. Ultimately the town moved to higher ground where Smoky Lake currently is.

$3 entry, 10am ~ 5pm. May 15 through Labour Day

Tha annual pumpkin fest also includes a threshing demonstration with this steam tractor. This year's 2003 weighoff is Saturday Oct 4.
