Walking on glass

by balhannah

The Calgary Tower affords great views of the city. It was opened June 30th 1968, and has become one of Calgary's most famous and identifiable landmarks. Wonderful views over Calgary from this Tower, I was glad we went up it!Throughout the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, a flame burned at the top of the Tower, making the Calgary Tower the World's Largest Olympic Torch. This was certainly a different idea! The torch is still lit today for special occasions, like on Canada Day. On the Observation Deck, we "stepped out into" space on the glass floor experience. I must admit I feel a little nervous doing it, but I still do it! I was standing 525 feet above the ground in the heart of Calgary and looking straight down! The glass floor is 36 feet long and more than four feet wide, the glass panes that make up the floor can each hold the weight of a couple Hippos!.... thankgoodness for that!...

Columbia Icefield

by richiecdisc

The Colombia Icefield is 325 square kilometers and is made up of eight glaciers and one of the biggest ice masses in North American. It is Jasper National Park's most popular attraction and something not to miss if visiting the park.

guide glacier hike

by richiecdisc

I did a guided walk on the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefield on my only visit to the park in 1994. I had done a similar hike in New Zealand a year earlier and had very high expectations because of how amazing that trip had been. This was not quite as exciting and the glacier was not nearly as clean and blue. It still beats doing a tour bus on the glacier and I would still recommend it. The guide was great and explained how glaciers are "rivers of ice" and how the formed the valleys.

hiking in Banff

by richiecdisc

Hiking is incredible in Banff. Besides the Wenkchema Pass, another favorite was the Plain of the Six Glaciers which we combined with the Honeycomb for a long day hike. Along with fantastic views of the craggy peaks and the glaciers, you get a bird's eye view of Moraine Lake as well.

Jasper National Park

by richiecdisc

Jasper joins Banff National Park as Alberta's contribution to the Banff-Jasper-Yaho-Kootenay conglomeration of Canadian National parks that dwarf many countries in sheer size when take together. It is quite a bit less crowded than Banff and offers lots of great hiking opportunities as well as the Columbia Icefield.

Banf National Park

by richiecdisc

Locals call it God's Country and when you see it, you have a hard time refuting the claim. Indeed, Banff National Park is not only the crown jewel of the Canadian National Park system but certainly one of the prettiest places on this planet. Now, if only Parks Canada would stop trying to turn it into Banff National Disney Park and milking the cash cow dry, it would certainly rank as one of the top National Parks in the world as well. With acreage to make small countries envious, a virtual carpet of dense pristine forest, emerald glacial lakes and a stunning array of craggy peaks, Banff National Park is a tour-de-force of nature able to capture tourist imagination in a single bound. Yes, this is the Superman of National Parks but much like Kryptonite cripples the man of steel, Parks Canada is doing just that to its prize possession. Should that keep you from going? Of course not, but...

Calgary

by canuckmike

Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, located in southern Alberta and 3 hours south of Edmonton, is well worth the visit. Being from Edmonton, this city has always been the rival city. Most of the time I've visited, it was usually just passing through or to visit a friend or an event. Recently my work has been bringing me here more and more and for some longer periods. This has allowed to really start liking this place. On the surface, I find it at more attractive city than Edmonton. It has the beautiful backdrop of the mountains to the west, a nicer downtown core and generally less garbage on the streets than Edmonton. What I found that it doesn't have as much as Edmonton is culture. Not necessarily the classic style of culture, but the urban scene or the 'DIY' attitude that Edmonton has. There are a lot of things to do here. Probably the most notable is the Calgary Tower which provides...

Dinosaur Provincial Park - another world

by vickiv2

Camping in Dinosaur Provincial Park is a great experience for any age, but especially thrilling for school-aged children. The place itself is beautiful in an other-worldly barren way and contains such exotic dangers as rattlesnakes (which we saw), scorpions (didn't) and poisonous spiders (didn't). The area is full of birds which are quite bold and will steal from your picnic table if you leave your food unattended for even a moment ; there are also deer - we were delighted to see a mother and two twin fawns come bounding out of the woods as if on cue while a park employee was giving a narration about the emergence of primitive mammals. There are many guided hikes and tours that cost money - I would go on one before deciding on more; you can also take some self-guided hikes - but some areas are restricted. One thing we didn't know is that most of the dinosaur fossils have been removed to...

Trail rides and pack trips

by bushpilot_185

If you're looking for a great place to do a pack trip - basically a multi-overnight camping trip with horses, we've found it! The riding takes place in the Rocky Mountains, west of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed as friends. The next morning, our gear was packed out on horses, and we were all given great horses to ride. We rode a few hours to one of their camps, where we spent the next few days, riding, hiking, swimming in the river, sitting around the campfire and feasting on great meals - they even have their own chef! The horses were all great and you can tell they take great care of them. I can't even begin to describe the scenery - the pictures on their website just don't do it justice. From scenic meadows surrounded by mountains, to winding mountain trails to peaks that sport incredible views, to gorgeous mountain lakes right up at the...

glacier tours

by ScottHurl

I would recommend light nature walking(for Banff). There is also quite a lot of shopping. Vancouver is more of a cosmopolitan than Calgary. You could also go a little bit north to visit a glacier. I had a friend that used to drive a bus to the glacier out of Banff.I hope I helped, take care.
