Edmonton

by canuckmike

Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, but more importantly, the place of my birth and where I grew up. Edmonton started as a fort in 1795 for the Hudson's Bay Company so they can do business in the area. In 1895 it became a town and a few years later in 1905, a city. Thanks to oil, the city has had few booms throuhout the years. There's ample opportunities of things for tourists to do in Edmonton. A world class museum, really big mall, one of the largest urban park land systems in the world and much more. It is also nicknamed the Festival Capital of Canada as there are almost always one fesitival or another going on. It has North America's largest Fringe Festival. One of Canada's largest theatres is located here as well as many other places to watch plays. The two major sports teams here are the Oilers and Eskimoes. Whyte Avenue offers a few blocks of night life and during the day, a...

Red Deer

by canuckmike

Well Red Deer is not exactly and thing to do but it's for sure not an off the beaten path destination in Alberta. It's located about half way between Calgary and Edmonton on the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway and with a population of less than 90,000 people which makes it the third largest city in Alberta. Most people know this place for Gasoline Alley which is a place where motorists fill up and gas on the way between Edmonton and Calgary. There is more to this place than that but by not much. There is a large choice of hotels here and a fair amount of restaurants for the size of the city although is no real attractions for the average tourist. There is the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame here and also and old fort. Red Deer does make a good base for exploring the surrounding region if you already have explored some of the more exciting regions of the province. This place serves it's purpose as...

Red Deer River Valley

by Bwana_Brown

After driving for hours across the gently rolling hills of south-central Alberta, the Red Deer River Valley suddenly opens up on you just south of Drumheller. The effect that it has had on the landscape as its has cut its way down through layers of rock deposited over millions of years is quite dramatic. The 724-km Rocky Mountains-born Red Deer is a major tributary of the South Saskatchewan River. On my most recent December, 2007 driving trip from Regina, Saskatchewan to the Red Deer area, I passed just north of Drumheller. The second and third photos show winter views of the river valley as I descended into it on Highway 27, just a few miles northwest of Drumheller. It was quite an impressive sight after so many hundreds of kilometers of driving across rolling prairie lands! The 'hoodoos' that we came across were not very far from here, just beside Highway 10. The river exposed many...

Hoodoos

by Bwana_Brown

On our 2004 trip to Alberta, my one specific target on our long route down the eastern side of Alberta was the Hoodoos in the Red Deer River valley, very close to Drumheller. These amazing spectacles, in a little park just off Highway 10 at East Coulee, were carved out of the rocks through 10,000 years of erosion by the wind and water. One minute you are driving across the prairies, and the next you descend into the Red Deer River valley to this landscape!75 million years ago, this area was the bottom of a seabed, evidenced by the brown layers of shale at the bottom of these pinnacles. Above this, as the climate changed through the following millions of years, the grey layer was built up by deposits from the lakes, swamps and forests that formed as the sea receded. The final piece of the puzzle was a hard sandstone cap that has protected the softer minerals below as erosion continued to...

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park

by Toughluck

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park stands astride the Canadian and U.S. border. Waterton is the Canadian entrance to the park. It's also the best way to see the most stunning views of this range of Mountains. Sitting at the north end of Waterton Lake is the Waterton Townsite and the Prince of Wales Hotel. From the hotel, you can spend a day watching the sun rise to your left, reach high noon directly out front of you at the end of Waterton Lake, and watch it slowly set to the west (your right). You never have to leave your seat. I'd recommend you do, as there are trails, boat trips, waterfalls, and birds to see and explore. But do have breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the Prince of Wales. Dinner in the bar is comparably priced to town and the view south across the lake, nestled between the high peaks is worth the price ---- and the food is excellent.

Banff National Park

by Toughluck

Banff National Park is one of the nations greatest places. It ranks among the top five places to see in North America. Snow clad peaks, deep green vallies. Crystal blue lakes feeding rushing rivers of foaming water. The majesty of God's wonders and the power it holds stands before you at every turn in this park.

Jasper National Park

by Bwana_Brown

We did not make it to Jasper on our 2004 visit, but we did enjoy this great park on our 2001 trip to Alberta. The most northerly and largest of the Parks that make up the Canadian Rocky jewels, this one requires a bit more effort to reach than does Banff. Its main claim to fame are its fields of glaciers, with the Columbia Glacier being visible from the Icefields Parkway as you drive straight through the middle of this region. Being as far north as it is, the road conditions here are a trifle more touchy, so you have to check the time of year to see if the road is even open. We drove through in late April and saw a few snow flurries and not much traffic!Just like Banff, there are so many things to see and do - taking a mechanized ride on a glacier, hiking, camping or just enjoying the scenery. Beautiful. The 2nd photo shows what you will be travelling in while on the glacier - the...

Banff National Park

by Bwana_Brown

The huge area of the Rocky Mountains in Canada's four adjoining National Parks of Banff/Jasper (in Alberta) and Yoho/Kootenay (British Columbia) has been designated as one of Canada's 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We took a day-trip to Banff one sunny afternoon, the Park closest to Calgary. Even though I had been to the Rockies twice before, I was astounded at how beautiful the area looked. It was like an unreal scene out of a movie or a postcard - just too perfect to be real! Whatever you do, take the time to visit somewhere in the Canadian Rockies - the combination of mountains, glaciers, forests and rivers in this protected area is one of the world's 'Must See' sights! There is only a small entrance fee of a few dollars - just do it!This scene was taken very near the town of Banff, which nestles in the shadow of the 2950 m (9840 ft) Mount Rundle. The Bow River, in the foreground, was...

Tip Photo
Sylvan Lake

by canuckmike

Sylvan Lake is a lake, town and a provincial park that is located about 20 km west of Red Deer. This is Alberta's beach town. With a population of around 7,500 people, the average age of it's citizens is 6 years younger than the rest of Canada. The beach itself is not too wide but fairly long with a nice grassy area right behind it. There is a decent selection of bars that are hoping on hot summer nights. There is a large outdoor waterpark here right along the lakeside and a variety of watersports to do. And there are a lot of other activities such as go karts, paintball, farmer markets and various other distractions out there. With almost all other beach towns there are the standard things to watch out for from overly drunken youth to cops who are overly aggitated and best to avoid.

Calgary – skyscraper city

by vtveen

Calgary was for us start and finish of a trip through Saskatchewan and Alberta. After a couple of weeks of plains, rural Canada and the impressive Rocky Mountains it was nice to come back in the ‘civilization’ of Calgary with its skyscrapers.Calgary is Alberta’s biggest city with about 1 million people and is a fast growing city due to the oil industry in Alberta. It is the gateway for a visit to the Rockies, which are about 100 km’s away. It has an international airport with connections to Europe. We walked from our B&B to downtown Calgary, which we reached more or less at Olympic Plaza. Here starts the un-Canadian Stephen Avenue Mall, with lots of trees and flowers, sidewalk café’s, restaurants, stalls and street performers. On one of the terraces along this pedestrian area we had our best Canadian cappuccino.Calgary Tower is exactly 190,8 metres high en we reached the viewing platform...
