Boating by jojocan This was so much fun! And the cool thing about it was, on one side of the lake, you were in Alberta, on the other side, you were in British Columbia! Of course, you had to be in good shape to paddle all the way to the other side.... you can also fish from the boats. You can rent rods and such from the same guy as you rent the boats. I can't remembre exactly the cost of this, but I think it was something like $7 per hour. And it was fun! Leave a Comment Directions: You can go paddle boating at Cameron Lake. Enter the park through the gates, and from there just follow the signs. You can't get lost!

The highway. by K.Knight From Waterton National Park it is only a short hop to cross the border into the United States and the state of Montana. I can suggest this as the journey takes you on the " Going-to-the-Sun Highway." The Going-to-the-Sun Highway is a spectacular 88 km highway through Glacier National Park that crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. The highway is literally carved into the side of the mountain, has clear running streams, wildlife such as bears and mountain goat. You have to experience this drive to believe its beauty! Rocky mountain big horn by K.Knight Waterton National Park is a haven for an astonishing number of wild animals. Anne and I took a leisurely drive, armed with a picnic lunch, to see how much wildlife we could see. We laid eyes on two black bear, Big horn sheep, a moose and mule deer. Prince of Wales & mountain behind Waterton Park by Bwana_Brown, 4 more photos One of the highlights of Waterton Lakes NP is the historic Prince of Wales Hotel, situated on a bluff overlooking both Upper Waterton Lake and the town of Waterton Park. On the drive into town, you cannot help but be impressed by this magnificent structure standing alone with the rugged peaks and the lake serving as its backdrop. The Prince of Wales has American connections that are unique in Canadian National Parks. The chain of events began in 1910 when Glacier National Park was created just over the border in Montana. An American railroad magnate who had supported efforts to establish the park soon established a string of elegant hotels and chalets (starting in 1913) in Glacier as a tourist draw to increase traffic on his railroad, which passed just south of the park. This was a great success, as the rich and famous enjoyed the natural wonders in some comfort. However, things took a turn for the worse regarding hotel occupency when the US government brought in prohibition (1920-1933) banning the sale of liquor. Never short of ideas, the magnate then decided that another elegant hotel just over the border in Waterton Lakes would provide a very handy 'liquor' outlet for his guests! Thus, the Prince of Wales was designed and built in the 'Swiss style', the same theme used in Glacier, and opened for business in the summer of 1927. Tourists were bussed up from the south for however many days of relaxation they required, before returning to the Glacier circuit. Today, this is the only grand railway hotel in a Canadian National Park that was not built by a Canadian railway company and it is now a National Historic Site. Non-hotel guests are permitted to enter the lobby to enjoy the views and admire the construction details. The elevators no longer work, so walking up and down to the rooms may be a chore for some. Of all the grand hotels in both Glacier and Waterton Lakes, the Prince is the most expensive, with 2006 room rates ranging between C$265-800 (US$235-710) during the summer high season. We just looked! Arriving back at the parking lot after our short walk around Red Rock Canyon Loop, we continued south for a short distance before crossing Bauerman Creek on a nice wooden bridge. An interesting formation of black lava rock protrudes from the bank here just at the start of the Blakiston Falls trail. This is classified as a 'short hike or stroll' with a total distance of 1.2 miles (2 km) involving an easy climb through the spruce and pine forest along the banks of Blakiston Creek, with fine views of the distant mountains. The 45 ft (14-m) high falls itself is quite impressive when viewed from a small wooden observation deck located along the trail above the falls. Altogether, it was a very pleasant walk, with the sun shining and lots of colourful wildflowers in bloom (3rd photo). This was just another 'warm-up' stroll for us, but if you want to get serious, the trail continues past the falls and along the creek (as the Blakiston Valley hike) for a full-day trip of 7 hours, 12.5 miles (23 km) round-trip and 1150-ft change in elevation! This part of Canada was first explored between 1857-1860 by the 4-man British Palliser Expedition, sent to map it and report back on the area's suitability for settlement. The Creek and Falls were named after the team's magnetic observer, Thomas Blakiston. Leave a Comment Directions: At the end of the Red Rock Parkway

Mountain 'wall' towers over Wall Lake by Bwana_Brown, 4 more photos Once we arrived at Wall Lake, we could see that it was quite an impressive spot! In the absence of a really wide-angle lens, I just could not capture the full effect with photos. This one shows the very steep and tall mountain wall that encloses one side of the lake, with a large snowfield still remaining from winter at the waters edge. A walking trail circles the lake, so we headed off to the right in a counter-clockwise direction to find a little spot for our meagre lunch of an apple, jalapeno cheese sandwiches and water bottles. As we neared the far end of the lake, by the snowfield, we passed an outhouse that had a line-up of lady hikers waiting their turns. We also figured out why the trail parking lot had been so full - along with quite a few routine hikers, a group of 50 Boy Scouts was on a day's outing! From the far end of the lake, we had spotted some tiny figures moving about on the snowfield, and now we had a much closer look as the group clowned around (by the centre finger of snow in 2nd photo). They were just about finished with the snow by the time we arrived, so we had a good look at it ourselves (3rd photo). It was very hard packed, just shy of being ice and I heard a whoosh and water sounds as a few more bits broke off and fell into Wall Lake (4th photo). The final photo shows how the mountain wall slopes away at the sides of the Lake, including several clear green paths through the forest where avalanches have knocked the trees down. We could also see several groups of fishers around the shores of the lake, angling for the Rainbow Trout that inhabit its waters. We really enjoyed this hike - it was a nice way to finish our three days in Waterton Lakes National Park before leaving in the morning for another four days, this time in Glacier National Park, Montana! Leave a Comment Directions: Just over the Continental Divide, into British Columbia's Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park, starting from the Cameron Lake area of Waterton Lakes NP
