Waterton Lakes National Park Things to Do

  • The Bison Paddock

Many people rush right in to Waterton Lakes National Park, and fail to stop at the Bison Paddock which is just inside the park entrance. Waterton is a place where the prairie meets the mountains, and the Paddock is located on the prairie, but with a great mountain view. The Bison Paddock is a large fenced in area with a one way loop road. Visitors...

  • International Peace Park Pavilion

On the south shore of Upper Waterton Lake you will find this Pavilion, between downtown Waterton Park and the town's Marina. There is a small park with a collection of interpretative displays that tell the story of the formation of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. As a history buff I found it very interesting. By taking the time to...

The Cameron Falls are located in the townsite of Waterton Village. They are signposted, so you really shouldn't miss them. Waterton Lakes National Park Nightlife

  • The only night life in town!

This saloon is located in the Bayshore Inn. It is a fairly large bar and gets pretty busy in the evenings. It is only open during the summer season. There are pool tables, a DJ and a dance floor. Waterton is a pretty casual place, and so is the dress code for the Thirsty Bear.

About 3 months prior to our trip, I checked with the major car rental companies to see what I could get for a deal. The wildlife

by jojocan Written Feb 5, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Like in all National Parks, you are not supposed to feed the wildlife! In Waterton, that rule is ignored regularly by tourists. It makes it dangerous to walk downtown sometimes. In one soccer field, there were several deer, and tourists were trying to get close to them. This is very unsafe people! Children have been attacked by mama deer proctecting their babies. Don't do it!

Waterton Lakes National Park Warnings and Dangers

  • Wild animals are still dangerous!

Always be aware of the wildlife around you. Yes, the deer, elk, sheep, goats and cougars wander right into town, but they are still wild animals, especially in rutting season, or when they have babies with them. As well, when you are off hiking in the trees, keep your dogs on leashes, even when you are alone - cougars like easy pickin's, and a dog...

You will probably encounter a bear while visiting this National Park. We saw two in only two days!Never leave your vehicle or approach the bear in order to get a better photo. • Bears!

There is a healthy grizzly and black bear population in Waterton Lakes National Park. Travelling in a group is recommended. Bear mace (last resort defence) and bear-bells (for noise) are available from some shops. I've also heard of bear-bangers, which might be compared to a military "thunderclap", a noise-maker which can shake the whole valley to...

Waterton Lakes National Park What to Pack

  • Depending on when you go...

Depending on the season you go to Waterton, know that because its in the mountains, the snow takes a little longer to melt, and its a little chillier, especially at nights. Bring clothes you can layer, and that are windproof. The winds in Waterton are anywhere from 60km / hr to 100km / hr, on average!
