Local legend has it that if you drink the water from St Mary's spring, you will return to Haida Gwaii.

Now, it's not in our nature to return to the same place twice, and we did drink from the water, so time to test the local legend!

This trip has to be timed so that you get to the wreck near low tide, otherwise you might have to head to high ground to get out of the water! It's about a 1-3/4 hour walk from the parking lot to the wreck, and the return trip takes the same length of time. This means going at a reasonably good pace. Hurry, and you can probably knock off 15 minutes in each direction. Take your time and the round trip could take closer to 5 hours...

The park entrance is at Tlell. You park at the Tlell River Picnic area parking area and follow the East Beach trail.

Is it worth it? If you've never seen a shipwreck, you get a nice view of the bow of a wreck. It's a really nice walk through some interesting second growth forest.

Just past (north) the Haida village of Skiddegate, off on the beach you run across Balance Rock.

Sitting there all by itself you wonder why it doesn't just fall over.
