Things to Do in Kelowna

North from Knox Hill.

The view to the north is in contrast to the view to the south. The land is more rugged, the shore of the lake much steeper and has not been developed as much as the lower shores to the south of Kelowna. Some more expensive resorts have been built on the west shore.

Guisachan House.

Almost hidden in among a housing estate, the beautiful grounds of a house belonging to one of the early pioneers in the area. I believe of Scottish ancestry, the gardens are full of plants one associates with Britain. The restauarnt serves an good meal in a relaxed surroundings and the seating is either inside or on the veranda.

All very different from the usual eating houses. There is a small parking area and one can browse the gardens.

View across the Lake.

Okanagan lake is close to 100kms long and the only bridge in that distance is a floating one at Kelowna. That bridge is visible to the left centre of the photo, the length is about 2 kms and includes a portion that raises to allow boats to pass through.

The city center is off the photo to the left. Way to the south is Penticton a smaller summer resort at the south end of the lake.

Directions: Knox Hill is the viewpoint from where this photo was taken, is accessible by car and provides a panorama of Kelowna and the lake to the north and the south. The Hill is to the north of the city centre. The web site for Kelowna is given below.

Restaurant view.

The day was warm and the meal was excellent and so we sat for a while enjoying the view from the deck of the reastuarant.

The immediate area in front was one with a small waterfall and stream that wandered away from the building. A little further away the golfers enjoyed some pleasant golf amid the trees. Away in the distance the blue of the lake and even further away the blue/ green of the hillside on the west bank of the Okanagan lake.

The idyllic scene was relaxing enough to spend the afternoon just whiling the time away.

Directions: In the hills to the east of Kelowna.

Relax at the Vineyard.

There are many vineyards and wineries to visit in the Kelowna area, some small, some larger and all with the opportunity to taste the wine produced and then for you to buy the product.

Some of the small ones cater to the client that travels by car, certainly a more pleasant place to visit, than the ones where a bus load of visitors descend en masse.

The smaller ones also offer a picnic spot to not only enjoy a drink but also the view across the lake. You could be one who spots Ogopogo and takes that all elusive photo to gain world fame. Should be easy to do with all the digital cameras around these days.

Directions: Mostly on the western or south facing slopes of the hills around Kelowna. Oick up a map from the visitors centre to find your way around after visiting the Wine museum in downtown Kelowna.

Naramata vineyard.

I include this photo under Kelowna, simply because the vineyard is typical of the scenery near that city.

It is a vineyard in Naramata which is also on the east side of the lake but about 80 kms away following the road to get to it. It is actually about 40 ms away but no direct road.

It was connected when the Kettle railway was still operating.

Summerland Ornamental Gardens is on a hill overlooking Lake Okanagan in Summerland. The Gardens are maintained by a non-profit organization and admission is by donations (it's worth it). There are many manicured flower plots -- the daisies are the most luxuriant -- and also a xeriscape garden.

Directions: Off Hwy 97 South about 9km north of Penticton.

The Okanagan Valley is dotted with regional parks, many of which are more than recreational areas but also rich in scenery. Antlers Beach Regional Park on the western shore of Lake Okanagan is a quiet preserve that features a waterfalls in addition to the eponymous beach!

Well, we're in garden country, so were you expecting something else? :) The Elysium Garden is an elegant, well-manicured garden that features many perennial flowers and ornamental plants. This would be a good place for wedding pictures.

Yup, I'm not kidding, I couldn't believe it when I saw it. So we stopped and tried it out, no joke, they opened the window, we ordered and then drove away with a few bottles of Okanagan wine!
