    Interior shot of a log home. The warmth and elegance of a log home is hard to beat. In most cases, the natural finish of the wood is varnished. Some commercial buildings and lodges can be as high as 4 stories

    Log home under construction

    The photo shows a log home under construction. Each log is carefully peeled, then shaped and notched to fit the other logs in the assembly. Typically, logs can be more than 18 inches in diameter. Many of the log homes are exported world-wide, particularly Japan.

    With the abundance of high quality timber in the area, many residents construct their homes and summer cottages from logs. The offer the advantage of elegance, durability and ease of construction and for the most part are relatively inexpensive. Most are built from Lodgepole Pine, White Spruce or Western Red Cedar.

    Here's a fine example of a gorgeous log home on beautiful Lac des Roches. The lake is about 8km long and has a fine fishery for both Kamloops and
    Gerrard Rainbow trout.

    Many homes have rather high steep roofs to enable them to shed the heavy snowfalls that sometimes occurr in the central Cariboo.
