The Alberni Canal extends some 50 km from the Pacific Ocean.
Uchucklesaht Inlet, a side arm of Alberni Inlet nearbye the Pacific Rim National Park (Broken Group Islands) offers good fishing and wonderful scenery. See photo below. It is possible to hire one of the many charters in the Alberni area. Henderson Lake is right there and has the highest rainfall in the world.
There are many First Nations (Native) people living here. Their presence is becoming increasingly stronger.
Therefore it is possible to view/buy many native crafts.
The picture below is of two large carvings which sit near the Somass River. One figure welcomes those coming to town from the river and the other faces the main street where many tourists pass through to the West Coast and hopefully stay and look around our town.
North Island College is situated in a wooded area right near our sports fields and track.
The college offers academic and technical courses and also has a popular programme called Elder College. This Elder College offers a series of courses that are of special interest to seniors.
The classes are well attended and have good instructors.
We have a very nice track that is quite well used. The setting is great as when walking or jogging on the track you can see the mountains, look down toward the canal and get a general overview of Port Alberni.
The track is all weather so no excuses if it rains. The center grass is used for soccer and football games and track field events.
The track is well lit at night which is particularly nice on a warm evening as you can wait until later to do your walk or run. Although I have never heard of any negative incidents with people walking or running at night, I don't think it is wise to do it alone.
The Somass River is a busy river during the fishing season and also for people just cruising in boats on a nice afternoon.
I took pictures below on lovely afternoon.
On our beautiful Somass River pictured below, you can rent a boat to just sightsee or go down the Alberni Canal and fish. Charters are available.
This is a good place to look over things maritime for adults and for kids. It is in a lovely setting right on the Alberni Canal.
