Float plane
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was an experience to rival the whale watching trip in Tofino as “best bit of the holiday” – in fact on reflection this one maybe just takes the prize! We both love flying but had never had the chance to go up in a float plane before, so when we saw this tour on offer we couldn’t resist. We were lucky enough to be the only passengers, and the whole flight was amazing! Firstly, taking off from water rather than a runway was of course new for us. Then, the views as we flew out over Clayoquot Sound were fantastic – deserted coves, unspoiled wooded hills and here and there a picturesque home tucked away on a private bay. Further out we came to the real highlight, viewing some of the grey whales from above, including this mother and calf. Far too soon the 20 minute flight was over and we headed back to Tofino for the final treat, the touch-down on the sea. A truly memorable experience!

Our tour cost $65 (Canadian) per person back in 2002, but I haven’t been able to find out what they charge now. Whatever it is, if you can afford it it’s worth it!

    Meet the whales
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are quite a few companies in Tofino offering whale-watching trips. I can’t remember why we chose this one, but we certainly had a wonderful experience. One thing we liked was that the boat was small. This means that everyone gets a seat close to the action. It also means that this might not be a good choice if you’re nervous of water or of the whales themselves. At one point a grey whale swam alongside our boat for several minutes. I know that she knew we were there and had decided to keep us company for a while, and perhaps check that we weren’t a threat. I found that an incredible experience, but I think a couple of the more nervous passengers were a little concerned she might swim under our small boat and surface beneath it, sending us shooting into the water! But please don’t let that put you off taking this trip, it really is amazing. Of course there’s no guarantee that you’ll see whales, let alone get as close to them as we did, but the company make this offer on their website: on trips that do not see whales we offer our passengers a complimentary trip with no expiry date. They wouldn’t do that if they weren’t pretty confident!

Trips last 2 ½ hours and run 3 times a day, Mar 1st – Oct 15th. You buy your ticket at the Whale Centre Museum on Campbell St - it’s a good idea to book ahead, especially in high season. You’re asked to be at the museum an hour before the trip to be kitted out in appropriate gear (see photo 2) and the group then makes its way down to the jetty together.

During the trip the guide will do their best to make sure you get as close to whales as possible, and will also point out other interesting wildlife – we saw seals, sea lions, various birds. We also saw a grey whale with her calf, although perhaps unsurprisingly she didn’t come quite as close!

This isn’t a cheap outing – tickets cost $69 for adults, $59 for students and seniors, and $45 for children aged 4-12. But I really think it is worth every penny and would highly recommend it.

And in this picture you can see a mother whale with her baby whale. Not easy to see, but that's what they were telling us during our trip.

We did the Zodiac tours and they are very good. Have a look at their website: http://www.remotepassages.com/zodiac.html

Tofino is not only popular in the spring or summer, but also in the fall and winter because of the storms. Many people like to stay here and experience some of these storms. Storms can be seen here in any season, but more likely in the fall and winter.

When we were there we got lucky and experienced a storm too. You better stay away from the beaches as the water can be pretty wild. The best place to experience these storms is from the Wickannish Centre as you can go onto the deck or stay inside to watch.

When we went for a whale watching trip in Tofino the first time we went in the spring. In the spring you have the best chances to see some Killer Whales (Orcas). During that trip we didn't see any Grey Whales, but the second time we went it was summer and then we saw the Grey Whales, but no Killer Whales.

Those Grey Whales are so big, it's impressive when you see them swimming close to your boat. We had a good close up of a Grey Whale and tons of Sea Lions and some Puffins. Really interesting to see!!! You should definitely make one of those trips and hope you get lucky to see some whales.

Hot Springs Cove is something that you should when visiting Tofino! It is located in the remote northern end of Clayoquot Sound. This is a great hot spring that is still in its natural state. You can book a tour to these hot springs in Tofino, many different operators make daily tours to this place. These trips usually take about 6-7 hours and cost about $90 CAD/$65 USD per person.

Once you arrive at Hot Springs Cove, there is a very pleasant 2km/1.2 miles walk through rainforest on a boardwalk. The hot springs roll down a cliff into different pools and finally into the ocean. A wonderful experience, just so relaxing. It might get busy here in high season.

This native art gallery features artists that are bringing new life to storytelling and art forms, resulting in a revitalization of tradition and culture. View some of the most sought after masks, carvings and jewelry in the world.

The artwork is created by artists right here on the West Coast by Nuu- Chah- Nulth First Nations. We also represent artists from the Tlinget, Tsimshian, Kwaguilth, Haida, Salish, and Coast Salish Nations all local to British Columbia.

There is also the Himwitsa Lodge, and the Sea Shanty Restaurant that belong to the House of Himwitsa (more about that in other tips).

After a day of activities in and around Tofino it is nice to end the evening with a stroll on the beach. Take your time to witness one of the beautiful sunsets that can be seen here. Sometimes the colors are amazing and I just love it how it reflects in the water!

When visiting Tofino you must visit the Chestman Beach. It's quite a big beach where you can enjoy sun bathing, swimming, walking, enjoy endless sunsets or just relax.

It's a beautiful beach of about 2km/1.2 miles. There is a beautiful little island that can be reached at low tides, but make sure to come back before the tide comes in again!! It's just such a nice place to be and enjoy nature at its best!

When you get a chance you should go whale watching in Tofino as this is the best place to see them. Sometimes you can see them close to the shore when you are walking along the beach. But of course it is nicer to experience it a little bit closer.

There are many tour operators in Tofino that do these kind of trips. The best time to see these whales (Grey whales and orcas) is in the spring time as the population is highest then...between early March and late May. We went in March and we saw lots of orcas (but no grey whales) and they were awesome!

We did the Zodiac tours and they are very good. Have a look at their website: http://www.remotepassages.com/zodiac.html
